Could magnets affect/damage TFT-LCD Screen?

I gave a leather holster to my cousin, since it looks like it won't fit the EVO and fits the iPhone perfectly... After 2 days, his screen has this line across the screen. Was this caused by the case I gave him, more specifically the magnets on the case? Will magnets from the leather case damage TFT-LCD screens?

I'd really love some input from this one.

Well I know magnets don't affect LCD monitors or TV's and my Touch Pro 2 case has a magnetic clasp and it is fine. However I think Apple issue a statement about magnets and the iPhone (can't find it though... Maybe I dreamed it?)

Magnets should have no effect on the LCD screen. A strong magnet could interfere with the flash memory, I imagine, though.
