Root Couple Questions

Hey everyone, Im picking up my epic touch wednesday and just wanted to check in and ask a few questions. Im coming from an evo 4g which I have loved very much. I hope that the epic touch will be a good replacement for my beloved evo. Ok so I would like to attempt to root this new phone. But I do not know what I need to put on it. I am looking for some better battery life and better performance. Im not sure if it works like that were I can get more battery and more performance. Also I am looking at getting the Otterbox Commuter case, any one have an opinion on that case?

Thanks -E.J.

You dont even own the phone yet and already want better battery life and performance lol

I would start with stock rooted, there is a simple odin method. Google qbking77 YouTube channel. His videos are a good place to start. The subject line will be something like Stock rooted el29 odin. After that check out the ics leaks, its pretty solid now. Just read lot first some have carelessly bricked while switching roms

The otterbox case seems good but i have trident aegis and really like it. Steinheil sgp makes good screen protector.

Installing Root...

Clockwork Mod...

You'll need both of these to Root...
Follow directions to a tee...
Got any questions ...
Let me Know...

Thanks for all the quick replies. What is clockworkmod? Its just a recovery manager? Also once I do the root from the video and the clockworkmod what do I want to do next? I just wanna get the best battery life(my old evo barely lasts half a day), performance and maybe have some cool root stuff.
Thanks, -E.J.

Clockworkmod is a recovery that comes packed in a kernel...
After youre rooted you need to install it for custom roms kernels modems and themes...
Do not install or use Rom Manager...Its known to Hard Brick Phones...

For battery life and if you stay on a Custom GB Rom...
Try flashing Calks Roms or The Blazer Rom...Unbelievable Battery Savers...

They can be found on the XDA Forum...
Got any questions ...Let me know...

I rooted my phone the first day I Got it. I recommend Blazer Rom, It's one of my favorite roms available. It has good battery life and its very fast and stable.

Hey everyone, got my epic touch today and oh my gosh is this thing sweet. So I got root from the first video that Ronny71 posted, can I go ahead and use setcpu to help get better battery life with just the first video done? Also if I find that setcpu is getting me good enough battery life do I have to do the clockworkmod? Thanks guys

Set CPU can only be used with a custom kernel...That can be overclocked ...best speeds are 1.5 to 1.6 on a GB Rom...You must have Clockwork Mod inorder to flash Custom Kernels, Modems, Roms and Themes...Two of the best Roms for speed and battery life are Calks and Blazer Rom...So first Install CWM...There is a Video on here I put up to do that...Next... pick the Rom choose a Kernel...flash both...Download Set CPU and then you can overclock the kernel...I had mine to 1.5...1.6 can be done but its not always stable...But those Roms will smoke with those Kernels...Any other questions...let me know...

This is top of the Line...One Helluva Rom...

Based on rooted 2.3.6 / EL29

ROM includes:
Rogue Gunslinger kernel
Busybox
and more
(Some removed apps are in the sdcard/Removed_Apps folder)

MODs included:
Tweaked system(Very FAST)
Kernel can be undervolted using included Tegrak profiles
Crawrj's & Maddoggin's Hotspot hacks to unlock Sprint Hotspot & USB tethering
Moved dalvik-cache to cache partition(now if it runs low on space, it will move back to Data partition)
Reduced auto-brightness range for better battery life
Removed haptic feedback from dialer
Notification bar will display TRUE network speeds, 2G(1x) & 3G(EVDO)
Camera can be used with less than 15% battery & during phone calls
Raised audio bitrate for most video recordings modes
Volume rockers can be used to take pictures
Reboot, Recovery & Download power menu options
Swapped phone & message buttons in dialer
Removed mandatory Exchange security policy
TouchWiz launcher displays 5 dock icons & 5x4 app drawer
Volume keys will wake phone from sleep
Disabled 100% battery notifications
Reduced promixity sensor delay
Browser UA string selection
Removed Camera sounds
Removed messaging from call logs
Colored notification icons
Battery % on battery meter
Transparent notification background
Removed USB Debug notification
Relaxed MMS compression ratio
Raised MMS recipient limit to 500
Annoying ads in programs are blocked
ICS Transitions
And other misc tweaks/mods

System has also been de-odex'd, apk's have been optimized & aligned

Notes about Battery Saver script

Can be used with any kernels that have init.d support

It completely eliminates the need for an application to set CPU speeds or profiles
Easily customizable if you use a text editor(scripts located in /system/etc/init.d)
It will set Max CPU speed to 800MHz & Min CPU speed to 200MHz when a sleep
If SetCPU, Overclock Widget, Android Overclock or QuickClock Advanced Overclock are detected, the script is ignored, so it will not affect them
Awake tweak will speed up the CPU to max speed for 5 secs after waking up to eliminate any lag while unlocking, etc, then it will return to the profiles

Preset profiles are:
1.2GHz - 100-85%
1.0GHz - 84-36%
800MHz - 35-0%

And just an FYI, even at 800MHz, the phone still operates very well & smooth but the battery saving are the real benefit

v3.0
Switch kernel to Rogue Gunslinger v1.4.1(Undervolting zips in FAQ work again)
Tweaked Battery Saver script
Tweaked Dalvik to Cache script(now if it runs low on space, it will move back to Data partition)
Some UI tweaks

Added
Awake tweak to battery saver script(it will speed up the CPU to max speed for 5 secs after waking up to eliminate any lag while unlocking, etc, then it will return to the profiles)

If your are updating, then nothing extra is needed during flashing as the update script wipes what is needed, unless other wise stated in the change log

Be sure to do a backup before flashing and read the change log

Hey everyone, got my epic touch today and oh my gosh is this thing sweet. So I got root from the first video that Ronny71 posted, can I go ahead and use setcpu to help get better battery life with just the first video done? Also if I find that setcpu is getting me good enough battery life do I have to do the clockworkmod? Thanks guys

Flash the Rom above which is Calks and you will have just what you are lookin for...

Im a little bit confuaed, i have set cpu and it seems like it is working but all i have done is root. I can use the main screen of setcpu and set my max and min and what mode I want it on. Setting it to power save and having the min at 200 it slows it down. Right now my battery is at 89% with 5hours and 37 minutes

You're setting speed on a stock kernel...You can triple the speed of that with a Custom Kernel...If you want something close to stock with a lot more speed and superior battery life flash the setup I posted above for you ...The Kustom Kernel is built into the rom...Then you'll see the speed increase...

Ok, so for the setup you posted about it said in there there is no need for a set cpu kinda of software so I should remove Setcpu? Do I have to set the settings in Setcpu a certain way before uninstalling it so it doesnt leave the phone set the way its set now(if that makes any sense)? And Also before I rooted I didnt do any kind of backup so is it and will it be possible for me to return to stock if I choose down the road? or do it for warranty work. Thanks for all the help it is so much appreciated.

You can keep Set CPU or get rid of it...Just uninstall...no need to do anything to the settings before uninstall...Or keep it and save it for another Rom...Up to you...

You have to install CWM to install this Rom...You can make a Nandroid backup of the system you have now before you flash the new rom once you have CWM installed......Then you can restore to this thru CWM anytime you want...You can Odin back to stock at any time...That will remove Root if you want to bring it back for Warranty work...

Ok guys, Ive gotten rooted but have a few questions. I used this video...
How to install Calkulin ICS ROM for Epic 4G Touch! - YouTube

to install Calkulins, however in his review a (and at the end of the first video mine does not look like his and is not android version 4.0.3 but mine is instead 2.3.6
Yes the wifi tether works but Mine doesnt look as cool as his. What is the one you posted Ronny? Please help. Also mine doesnt have Go Launcher nor any programs added to manage the battery saver stuff. Am I missing something? Thanks, E.J.

I don't know where you got those videos from But I use only QBking77 for Video Install and reviews...
What you have now Calks Rom for GB (Gingerbread)...

These are better Videos...From the Best ...
Go here... qbking77 epic 4g touch - YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...2009.12709.0.15896.18.18.9.4.8.0.74.283.5.5.0

This is the Rom... E4GT ROM (v3.0) - Mirror
md5 - 36ab61f44da3cc2366facf1784e32f6d

This is an Excellent Rom for Speed and Battery Saving potential...Copy that to your PC then to your SD card of your S2 ..Then Flash that thru CWM...
Then flash the Modem... E4GT_Modem_FD02.zip

When its done ...Reboot System thru CWM...Your Done...

Now if you want ICS 4.03

Copy this to your PC E4GT 2 ROM (v1.4) - Mirror
md5 - 1b437651a6e69452b762ecf9321f8226

and then drop it on your SD Card on the S2...

Then copy this to your PC... E4GT_Modem_FD02.zip
And drop that onto your SD Card on your S2...

Now go into CWM and flash the Rom first...
After that is complete flash the Modem...Wait till Install is complete...Then Reboot System thru CWM...Then you're done ...You will have ICS thru Calks Rom ...Which will be 4.03...

Do not flash this... This will get rid of a lot of applications on the Rom...
Bare ROM Converter (v2.0) - Must be flashed AFTER flashing the complete ROM - For a list of apps that it removes, click here

Yep...It Should...
Install a app called Titanium Backup and you'll never worry about that again...

Ronny71 thank you so much for all the help. Im now running Blazer v4.1. But still only getting 12-15 hours battery life. What else can I do to help this? I have Voltage control downloaded and set on conservative and cfq, with max at 1200 and min at 500, but how can I adjust the voltage? Thanks again. Im just trying to get the life to around 20 hours or more if possible

Let me tell ya 12-15 hours is excellent...
Let the Rom settle in for a couple of days and see where your at...
Conservative is where you should be...What kernel are you runnin and what do you think of the speed ???You can get overclocked kernels near 1600 from Steady over at XDA...But if your satisfied with that ...Thats ok...

I don't play much with voltage adjustments when I'm runnin GB Roms...Cause Im interested in the speed...Ill see if I can post the thread for ya on voltage settings for custom kernels...

Now don't forget that Calks Rom which I posted above takes care of that for ya...You don't have to do anything...If you want to try it sumtime...Do ...Its a great Rom...

Something that helps with battery life is a program called Juice Defender and Ultimate Juice...They help control Data usage and other things when set up right...Take a look at them too...

Get it here...

Hey everyone. Thanks again for all the help getting me set up on this phone.

Now I got a notice this morning that said an update is out for it. Can I do this update while my phone is rooted and all or do I have to un-root? Thanks again for all the help.
-E.J.

I wouldn't. Since you've inherently changed the boot loader and other basic pieces of software there's no telling what an OTA update will do to your phone.
