Help Cracked Screen Affects Proximity Sensor???

I had unfortunately cracked the screen on my brand new S3 just a few days after purchasing it (sucks to be me)...

A couple of weeks later I started having issues with the proximity sensor during calls. Whenever I'd answer or make a call and put the phone to my face the screen would shut off (as it should). However, when I'd remove the phone from my face it would not turn back on, even if I'd hit the power button on the side or home screen key at the bottom. The only way the screen would turn back on is if the person at the other end of the call were to hang up. Now, the screen isn't TOO banged up (the touch screen and all the features still work perfectly fine), however one of the cracks does happen to be located over the proximity sensor.

Is it possible that this crack is affecting the functioning of the sensor?
In the meantime I've shut off the sensor feature via my call settings, but it's bugging me that I am unable to take advantage of this clever feature in the meantime.

If the crack intersects the space the proximity sensor operates within, then yes - it will affect it

The crack goes over the sensor, so I'm assuming that that's the case as well. I've shut off the sensor entirely, which isn't a big deal for me as I can always just switch the screen off with the power button during calls if Im worried about pressing anything during a call.
