Help Cracked Screen (Fair Warning)

It's a sad day, cracked my first smartphone screen (picture attached). Dropped my GNex from waist height onto tile and that was all she wrote. Had a BB for 2 years, D1 for 2 years, and a D2 for two years, all had some battle scars, but no cracks (I'm generally really careful with my phones). Granted, this was a direct hit, but as this was my first ever Samsung phone, I'm kind of second guessing a future purchase from them.

Thankfully I have insurance on it. I have a few questions though.....

1. Can I do an insurance exchange at a Verizon store?

2. Do I have to lock and unroot my device to exchange it?

3. Will Asurion replace it with only a GNex or could I get a Razr Maxx for example?

1. Insurance has to be done through Asurion, stores won't (unless it's a GREAT exception) be able to handle those replacements.

2. If you can, I would, but I don't know how picky they'll be on it.

3. It'll only be another GNex. The only way you'd get into something else, would be if you got sent a few bad ones in a row, or if you got a REALLLLLLY friendly rep who was having an "I don't care, here ya go" day.

As for second guessing Samsung...honestly, it can happen to any phone. Doesn't matter who makes it, or how. It's all about the angle of impact, and everything else. Could drop two phones at the same time, of the same make, at the same height, and one might break, the other might not. I've had Samsung phones (as well as others) for years. Omnia, Fascinate, and my Nexus. It's also why I keep insurance. While I've never had a broken phone (and the only drops I've had were from my desk to the carpet), I can't fault the phone for me dropping it, if that happens. Now, if I set it on a pillow of clouds, and smiled at it, and it cracked spontaneously, then I might have some questions...

Call Samsung up and ask them about a screen replacement. I smashed my SG2 up at work, and they replaced the screen for $50. It took them 5 days including shipping. Pretty sweet deal all things considered.

I sympathize. I cracked the screen on my Galaxy Nexus as well only after owning it for only 5 months. I've had smartphones for years including a Dinc, Droid 2, LG Ally, a couple blackberries and a Windows phone. I even have the silicon case on my Gnex and it just broke falling from my pocket on to our hardwood floor.

Same thing has happened numerous times with my other phones. I'm just living with it for now. I might get a new one eventually with Asurion. I also have a few hairline scratches so I just think the "fortified" glass on the Gnex is just nowhere near Gorilla glass quality and it doesn't help that the phone is just massive. Still loving the Gnex though.

if you didn't see the crack, you wouldn't even know it was there by touching the screen.

took my phone out of my otterbox commutter to go naked.

accidenelty dropped on kitchen tile and shattered the screen. called amex to file a claim for reimbursement. amex is awesome.

BINGO! Happened to my Droid X with Gorilla Glass from being in my back pocket.

should be a law that all smart phones have Gorrila glass 2 :D

Wouldn't matter - Gorilla Glass is only for scratches, not drops. Plenty of Razr/Razr Maxx owners have found that out the hard way.

Exactly, I have a friend with a iPhone that looks the same as that cracked GN.

Also, keep in mind the bigger the screens get the more susceptible they are to things like this. It is simple physics.

Not for an insurance replacement. I'd still wipe it completely.

Now I hate cell phone insurance, asurion to be specific. They need to do a vanishing deductible or something. I've probably bought my phone two times over with the money I've paid in insurance, but then I still have to pay the $100 deductible. And on top of that, their certified like crap device is sometimes worse off than the one I broke. It's like what the hell am I paying $6-$8 a month for? I can go on eBay and get something better than what they sent me for all the money I paid them.
And get this, most people who buy a GNex don't feel like tweaking and optimizing it to get more time out of their battery, and they're eager to dispose of it so that they can get a razr maxx with longer battery life, and I'd gladly pay them $200-$300 to take it off their hands :)

yea i bought mine in july.

so mad, i took it out of the case to enjoy it naked around the house. next thing i know it slips out and falls on tile face first.

samsung, get goriall glass 2! waiting to hear back from amex now. i hope they do a full reimbursement for me.

Doubt Gorilla Glass 2 would have survived. I'm not sure that "unexpected abuses" would accept a 3 foot drop as their criteria.

I had a Casio commando with gorilla glass. That glass is pretty damn tough. In the commando forum there's maybe two people with cracked displays. But it is a smaller screen, and the screen doesn't extend to the edge of the phone.

Also, the way that phone is built, the outer rim of the phone is thicker. If you were to lay it face-down, the screen would never touch the surface, it'd be held up by the thicker bezel on the phone. Definitely helps with certain things.

It helps that the Casio Commando was actually built to provide "military grade resilience"... it essentially was built with a case already on it. It also helps that it seems like such a phone (especially with the extra weight and cost so it would meet military specs) would have limited appeal, whereas the Nexus is one of the more popular phones.

With the specs on the Commando (which is as big and heavier than the Nexus with a screen that is a full inch smaller), it seems surprising that people on the forum had broken screens at all.

Very true. But I've seen some myself (I worked an indirect), and it's a lot of times due to bascially neglect or carelessness. I've seen people put them in the VZW leather holster, and then lean against counters. Well, duh. Or the guys that throw them in their truck cabs, forgetting about them when they toss stuff in with it. Just stupid things. Then again, I also have a guy with a RAZR come in one day (a week after it launched), with a SHATTERED screen. Not scratched, not a small crack. This thing was trashed. And he got mad when I told him he'd have to call insurance. He really thought there was something wrong with his phone, because he shattered it. As if he expected it could never break.

It's smaller than the GNex. About the same weight. I mean it suited my needs, but now that I'm no longer doing highly physical work and I like having an unlockable bootloader, the nexus seems right for me.

No matter the phone, no matter how much Gorilla Glass is on there...If it takes a direct hit on ceramic tile or Granite, its crakin man! My advice to everyone who asks me if a case is the way to go... Is to throw a Diztronic TPU case on it and keep it moving, always better to be safe then sorry!

It was definitely a direct hit, bottom right corner.

I purchased the Diztronic case in early January and it sat in my work bag the entire time. That being said, I have the Diztronic on the replacement Nex...Asurion had it to me in 24 hours.
