Cracked Screen.. Replaceable under manf. warranty?

Hi all,

I have purchased my Droid DNA about two months ago and I bought the wireless charger for it (some nokia brand I believe). About 2 weeks later, the wireless charger stopped working for my phone; it would say charging for a split second then goto wireless charger was removed and stay that way.

I took my phone and wireless charger into a VZW store and they replaced the charger without even testing it out. I get the charger home and this time it says that it is charging and stays that way until you remove the phone. However, I left it charge all night and it had the same amount of charge as when I placed it on the charger (~60%). I tried again the next day, and it did the same thing. I researched a bit online and saw that they just replaced the phone if it still didn't charge as a manufacturer's defect.

At this point, I decided to say screw it I'll just plug it in from now on and i'll cut my losses on what I spent on the charger. Then about a week ago, I dropped my phone barely 3 feet and cracked the screen pretty bad. Now I'm wondering if I can still get the phone replaced since the wireless charging doesn't work, or if they'll see the cracked screen and say that they can't replace it.

Any ideas?

Generally a cracked screen due to "neglect" rather than defect is not covered by warranty. However it usually is claimable through mobile insurance if you signed up for any when you bought the device. If the device is still functional, and you can prove that the wireless charging isn't working, then perhaps you can use the warranty. However they might be able to say that the fall broke the charging and thus deny coverage.

Thanks for the reply, and no I didn't opt for the insurance when I purchased the phone :(

Only real option at that point is to take it into repair. It will void your warranty of course, but it's not like you'll be making a warranty claim anyway. There are tons of companies out there that will repair a cracked screen, but as per the wireless charging bit, I haven't heard of anyone so far that mentions inductive charging. Hell even replacing the charging port on the phone requires a "non-refundable deposit" from some technicians that basically says "we're taking $10 from for just trying to fix the phone. If we break it even more, oh well."

You screwed yourself by causing damage. They'll see it and charge you for the full price of the device.

The best thing to do is get insurance in the future.

There are open enrollment periods for insurance. Verizon just left one (ended on the 3/23, I believe). If you can hold out a little longer you can wait and then pay 170 bucks for a CLNR.

You cant get open enrollment for a defective device. Plus there is a several day period, which stops people from putting insurance on their line and immediately calling Asurion to file a claim.

Like if you do not have flood insurance and your house gets flooded. Some Insurance provider isn't going to cover you after the fact.

NYankee is correct, signing up for coverage with a broken phone isn't going to happen. They will reject you if you tell the truth, and it's insurance fraud if you don't. Unfortunately you are out of luck with the warranty.
