Help Cracked Screen. What's my play?

Kevin B

Newbie
I cracked the screen on my fascinate today (I'm not a happy camper right now). It's obviously a just paper weight now. I don't carry the insurance so what ever I do is out of pocket. I would appreciate people's suggestions. Options I can think of (and I'm open to others)

1) Buy another fascinate at full retail price from Verizon
2) Buy a used fascinate off ebay
3) Get another phone from Verizon
4) Buy another brand off ebay

I have mixed feelings about the fascinate. I'm really torqued that we haven't seen 2.2 but other than that I've been pretty happy with it. My phone was not rooted. I HATE apple's business model (completely closed compared to an open environment) but like their products. I also think Apple products are over priced. I'm not up to date on the current android phones since I wasn't planning on upgrading for another year or more. I'll mention my wife has a fascinate as well so if I got another phone and wasn't really happy, I could potentially trade her for it.

I suppose I have two fundamental questions. First, is buying used a big risk and worth the potential savings? Second, if I was gong to away from the fascinate, what would you recommend?

Thanks,

--Kevin

I'd probably go for a droid x and enjoy the gingerbread goodness.

Verizon is telling me what I need to do is add a new line $10/month to the plan and then I can get a new phone at the reduced rate. The problem is the extra $10/month is $240 over 2 years and about the discount they're giving on the phone. This makes no sense to me. How do you guys switch phones? Where do you buy them?

Thanks,

If you don't have an insurance, then I think you should buy it off forums or ebay.

Depending on what phone you want, but most of the used phones are around $200-$300.

Get a Droid X off of Craigslist. Get the ESN from the seller, call Verizon to make suure its clean, verify the esn they gave you is the one on the phone at the time of sale and you're good to go.

I will never again buy a phone under contract. The carrier's solution is always to get the customer to spend more money. Why on earth would someone who only needs one line add another?

I cracked my screen and luckily I had ins, but you can always go to a 3rd party cell phone repair place. I called one in my area and they charge $130 for a screen replacement (provided the screen is the only thing wrong with the phone). I am sure different places vary in price and if the phone itself still works then it is better then buying a whole new phone.
