Help Cracked Screen

Got some bad news from my son this morning. He dropped his phone and the screen is cracked. The phone still functions. But for how long? The good news is knowing my son. I purchased insurance on it. The bad..its a hundred dollar deductible.
So, I started thinking about replacing the screen and what that would cost. I did find the screen and digitizer assembly on amazon for 42 bucks.
Next step was to see if there are any instructions out there . Found a couple of YouTube vids. Most of it looks pretty simple but tedious. I have worked on PC's most of my life, so I'm OK with trying it. But there is one thing that confuses me. In the video's, they do not show the part about the separation of the LCD screen and the digitizer. One, even says something about that being the tough part. That's where I am confused. If I buy the screen and digitizer assembly together. ...Then shouldn't it just be a matter of putting it into the phone and reattaching the ribbons and other parts and putting the phone back together.??I'm a little lost on that part. Anyway if anyone has any experience on this and could explain it to me. I would be grateful. If you feel the need to flame me for being cheap...lol. Go ahead. But, I would really like to try it. Thanks.

$42 for an iffy situation against $100 for a guaranteed repair. Not really much to think about, is there?

In almost every case of "I can probably do it myself" that I've seen here, the end result was "how much do you think it'll cost me to get the phone fixed?"

We used to (back when I owned a shop that did actual repairs on cellphones) save phones that were beyond repair. One of the main uses of those phones was for new techs to practice on the screens. The phones were garbage anyway, so cracking 5 or 10 screens before he started to get the idea didn't really matter much. But I only ever had one tech who tried a screen replacement and got it perfect the first time. (He was the kind of genius who was just wasting a few years inventing the unified theory of everything before he started doing "real" work.)

If you want to try, you'll save $52. If you don't dislodge a connector or break a microminiature part. Oh, when you're done, shake the phone around a little. If you hear any rattling, DO NOT replace the battery. You forgot to tighten that one screw down. Or you didn't fasten that little part down. And putting power to the phone could turn it into silicon soup. But if I were you, with all my experience (and with my 71 year old hands and eyes), I'd pay the extra $52 and save money on the worry pills. We did that 2 weeks ago when my great nephew broke the screen on his phone. I probably could have replaced it. But I opted to pay the carrier's techs to do the work. It's easier playing solitaire than worrying about someone else's phone.

You'll need to also buy the adhesive tape that holds the digitizer to the LCD, I've replaced many, including ones on a OnsSV.

It's not an issue putting two new pieces together, it's hard if your were to just replace the digitizer OR LCD.

Since your buying both new it will be a piece of cake, no trying not to damage one part while replacing the other.

Thank you. Now that is clear. I have to say that in the vids I have seem them even re use the tape. But I will make sure to get it new too. Again, thanks for the clarification..
