Help Crashes, Texting issues, Bad battery

Android Malfunctions

My mom and I bought these phones about two and a half years ago, they're just a couple of standard Motorola Droids and our service provider is Verizon.
Lately we've both been having odd issues with our phones. For me, my phone has been randomly turning itself off while in the middle of use (for example, I'll be in the middle of a text or using an app, and it will suddenly freeze and then turn itself off.) Upon turning it back on, it gives me a list of random "texts that could not be sent" that I had sent up to weeks prior to the crash. To try and fix it, I've just been deleting text history to see if maybe it just has to much excess storage or something. But now, both my mom and I have been having trouble receiving texts from people. I just now received five texts that she had tried to send me over the course of around four days. Is this Verizon or do I need to do a cleaning of our phones? I have seen findings that smart phones behave similar to computers in that they can have a build up of old information that can make them really wacky after a while.
As for my battery, it's begun draining at an alarmingly swift rate even if I'm not actively using my phone, which on most days I'm not, because I'm at work for about ten hours a day and leave my phone alone. To fix it, I really just want to know if I should just replace the battery or something. It hasn't made a difference using different chargers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you took the time to respond or read this, thank you!

You might try booting into recovery mode and wipe the Cache partition.
There is also the Verizon Motorola Software Update and Repair tool
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-116950/
It will backup your data, reflash the firmware and restore your data.
Depending on how you used and charged your device since you had them, the batteries may be near their end of life.
How easy it will be to replace the battery will depend on the device model number.
