Cross Platform IM?

Is there any decent application for cross platform instant messaging? My wife has an iPhone and I have a Samsung Captivate. I really don't see the point in using SMS to send quick messages back and forth while I'm at work or wherever when we could easily use some IM client.
 
Gtalk should be available for iPhone, and it's already integrated into your Android phone.
 
Last I checked there were apps on iPhone that you can chat on AIM, MSN, ICQ and such. Just install one of those on the iPhone and some thing like eBuddy on the android. And chat away.
 
The best options are TextPlus and Ping.

Although be aware that as Android 2.1 doesn't support push notifications (in apps anyway) there will be some delay in receiving messages depending on how often you check for messages.
