Hi there,

We have had a mast issue in our area which is now resolved and have our signal back. However my new Cubot GT90 refuses to believe this and is constantly roaming with the signal when all other phones have full signal. Our family all are on Orange, bar one who is on EE. I've disabled all the data roaming stuff but this still persists and it is signal roaming. And I have tried the sim in my old sony xperia J and my old Nokia brick and the signal in them is full. Can anyone help?

You say it's "roaming", but if you are in the UK (which I infer from the Orange/EE combination) and using a UK SIM then unless you are on the coast very close to Eire or France it's not actually possible for the phone to roam. There is no roaming agreement between the different UK networks, and that's something that's controlled by the SIM rather than the phone, so it can't actually roam onto O2, Vodafone or 3. Hence unless you are within range of an overseas network (35km is the limit for GSM) it's more likely that the roaming symbol is an error.

So when it says it is roaming, what network is it actually connected to? I wonder whether the "problem" is that the software on this phone is confused by the Orange/T-Mobile merger to form EE and is reporting "roaming" because you are using an Orange SIM but the basestation is identifying as EE (or T-Mobile)? There was a time during the merger then some phones would report this as roaming, so while it shouldn't happen now who knows with these off-brand Chinese handsets.

If the problem is very weak signal as well as a roaming symbol, and it wasn't doing this before the mast problem, then the best I can offer is to suggest you register (it's free) so that we can discuss it to-and-fro and try to work out what the problem is, which isn't possible with a "guest question". In the absence of more information the only other thing I can think to check is that it's set to 2G/3G mode (since if it's set to use just 3G it might well have a weaker signal, especially indoors).
