Curious tethering change with update

I've been noticing that since the OTA update when I plug in to tether it takes me to a verizon page at start up. it's not the sign up for tethering page, but I wonder what's going on. It's a sales pitch page full of verizon service options and other sale-able stuff. Anybody else getting this? Maybe tethering is not as stealthy as claimed previously. I don't know. The wifi hotspot is so flaky to connect sometimes it's easier to just plug in and tether. (rooted)

Does it also pop up when you usb connect your phone to the PC without tethering? I get that as a windows "autoplay" type of action as it recognizes a Verizon device.

No , only with the tethering option enabled. Otherwise the razr options pops up. It can only pop up with an internet connection as it is taking me to their web site. It's definitely new with the update. Makes me wonder tho if they know I'm connected via usb. I'm using "easy tether.

cbreze... Yes, I'm also directed to the sales pitch for some Version offering. I should mention that when using the Razr Maxx built in tethering, the speed (seat of pants feeling) seems less then when I do the tethering and use Easy Tether /Razr Maxx. With Easy Tether and the Razr Maxx it's very fast

Agreed, easy tether works fabulously and the speed is really good. I came across a youtube vid showing how to adjust my settings for free hotspot using an editor called SQLite. I'm wondering if there isn't a setting that can be adjusted for tethering also. The hotspot feature works pretty well most of the time. I'll just use that as needed. Maybe I can figure out the other setting later.

Root and do the SQL hack to enable the hotspot for free. Heck, you're already paying for the data so why should it matter how you use it? Its super easy too.

Been using the stock hot spot since I rooted. It works great, just is squirley connecting sometimes. but neither here nor there as my main concern was the wondering about the Verizon sales pitch page showing up when beginning the tether connection. Seems BillArf gets the same thing so I'm not alone and that was what I was wondering about. The other concern is if they know enough to know your making a tether connection to generate the Verizon web page then how much of a stretch is it to figure out your tethering and direct you to the tether sign up page. Since it started with the update it makes me think they are maybe inserting some type of monitoring code in with the updates. Just me thinking and projecting out loud. Guess I'll stick with the hot spot connection and not worry about it. ;)

Why is it that forums disallow talk of piracy, but look the other way when it comes to illegal tethering? I know this won't make me popular, but I do hope VZW and other carriers develop or are developing successful countermeasures. The networks are a finite resource that should be used and shared responsibly by all.
