Root Current updates

Hi Guys & Gals

I have had my Incredible since the beginning, pre-ordered it and was one of the first members on the Inc forum. I rooted it following the simple (at the time) procedure. I don't remember now how I did it, it's been a long time and hey, I'm old!

I have never flashed a ROM or done anything other then root, to enable WiFi tethering, so the phone is stock.

My Android version is:
2.2
And my Software number
3.21.605.1

My wife has an unrooted Dinc and has received numerous updates. All have seemed to improve her performance somewhat. Her signal, both call and Bluetooth are much better then mine.

I would like to update my phone to the current released update without losing root or having to do a factory reset. Is there a way to do this? Just apply current update, etc?

If so, can someone point me in the right direction with easy to follow instructions?

It would be greatly appreciated!

First, we need to know if you are s-off or not. You need to boot into the bootloader to do this.... The easiest way to get to the bootloader is download the app "quick boot" and choose the option to boot into the bootloader (grant superuser permissions when prompted).

Once in the bootloader,in the top left the screen will say "s-off" or "s-on".
If it says s-on, you will need to install the unrevoked forever patch using the custom recovery (probably clockwork).

Once you are s-off you can go ahead and install the latest pre rooted software, found here:
[ROM] Stock rooted OTA 4.08.605.15 - 06-27-2012 - xda-developers
You would install that by following directions found here:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/521423-how-flash-roms.html

You will notice that those directions recommend a factory reset, it is not technically required, but if you want to be sure of a bug free experience, you should do a factory reset.

Tips on backing up/restoring data can be found here:

Lastly you should update your radio to the latest, found here:
Radios | PvilleComp's

Those are installed by following directions found here:
Flash in HBOOT | PvilleComp's

Thanks, I will check, but if I remember right, I do have "S-off" but like I said I will check for sure. Then follow the directions you linked to and see what happens! LOL

You may also want to update your recovery to the latest version once you have s-off. Use "rom manager" to do that.

OK, Ran into one more question.

I found on that link to the ROM you posted That the "Touch of blue" ROM sounds interesting and still basically a stock ROM, so decided to give it a try.

In the flashing instructions it says "Wipe dalvik-cache and format everything in the mounts and storage menu except emmc and sdcard before flashing."

I don't have "emmc" listed in my mounts and storage menu in recovery. I have:

Boot
System
Data
Cache
SDcard
SD-EXT

Which of those do I format?

I hadn't refreshed the page so I didn't see this post. That is probably why my menu looks different. I will do this, thanks!

You may not see "emmc" and 99% of the time, just selecting then"data/factory reset" option is sufficient.

You may also notice that the rom you are looking at probably doesn't have the latest minor software update included... So you will be prompted to install a software update from Verizon that you can NOT install. To stop the nag you would have to modify the build.prop file to match the current software version.

Follow directions found in this thread but change the numbers to match what is found in this post(45):

Thanks for the heads up!

I am about to try the flashing process. taking a few shots to steady the nerves. :)

A question about the "radio" you said to update. On the site you linked to there are three versions of HTC radios:

Eclair
Froyo
Gingerbread

How do I know which one is a match for this ROM?

I assume Gingerbread since it seems to be the latest.

Yup, gingerbread would be the latest, froyo is what you are on now.

OK, Thanks!

Rom flashed fine! Took longer then I thought it would for the first boot up, but everything seems good except on minor problem. I went on the market and re-downloaded Titanium backup (paid version) and it says it installed, but it's not in my list of available apps. I went back on the market, but it says "already installed". I have no way to open it and restore my apps and settings. Any idea what's happening?

Strange... When viewing in the market, it should also give you the option to "open" and uninstall. Try rebooting and see if it appears in the app drawer, or try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'm dumb! I Installed what I thought was the "Pro" version of Titanium, but it was just the "Pro Key". I have to install the free version first! Duhh

Something else came up now. I followed the directions to install the new radio, but I don't know if it did. It here somewhere I can check the version number? I put the new radio file on the root of my SD card and powered off as it said to. Then powered on holding the power button and down volume button as instructed. But nothing happened, the screen stayed black until I let go of the buttons then it booted up normally. So I don't know if the radio installed because it gave no on-screen indication?

You'll definitely get an indication it installed. Try just using the app quick boot to boot into the boot loader and the file will load up.

OK, That worked. The instructions on the site said after booting with the power and down volume buttons pressed, the rest was automatic. But doing it "manually" through the Bootloader menu said it was loaded successfully.

Thanks much for all your help and patience! It has been an interesting adventure! Now when I get my S3, I'll have a little more confidence to try and root.

Again, Thanks a bunch! :D
