Help Custom Notification Sounds

Stuntman

Android Expert
On my old phone (Galaxy S3), I have some custom sound files that I create for notification sounds. I had no issues using them on my old phone on all apps that allow custom notifications. On the Nexus 6P, I am unable to set custom notification sounds for Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger.

In Google Hangouts, I can actually see the option to select my custom notification sound. When I do, it never plays the custom notification sound. Instead, I plays the last notification sound that was selected amongst the notification sounds that the app came with. When I check the notification settings, I see my custom notification sound selected.

With Facebook Messenger, I do not even see my custom notification sounds selected on the list. All I have to select from are the set of notification sounds that came with the app.

I created the notification sounds using Talkadroid. It is an app that uses the text-to-speech engine. I type a few words and it generates the sound file that speaks those words. For instance, I use the app to create a sound file that says, "You have received email." I save it as a sound file. In Gmail, I can see the file I created and I select it. Whenever I receive email, I hear, "You have received email."

I tried copying these sound files to various folders like the media, audio, notification folders and other such folders all over the phone. It doesn't seem to have any effect.

I just got this phone and I find it disappointing that it is becoming difficult to set a sound file as a notification sound for some apps. I am also disappointed that I cannot select a song as the notification sound for the alarm. I could do that before on my old phone.

you are making me wonder if I really really do want to get the Nexus 6p

I answered you Alarm Clock question already, but it is not appropriate here

I am hoping that this is more of an app issue than a phone issue. I am extremely surprised that Hangouts is one of the apps that is having this issue. Facebook is less of a surprise.

I ran into this with Hangouts, Gmail, and a couple other apps. I was able to fix this issue by changing the app permissions. For some reason, by default, these apps didn't have "permission" to access the phone storage.

To change an app's permission, go the app drawer. Long-press on the app and and drag it to the "App Info" icon. Select "Permissions" and flip the "Storage" toggle. That will allow your app to access phone storage for custom ringtones and/or notifications.

Thanks, Estubby. I am now able to set the custom notification sound in Facebook Messenger. I updated the permissions on a few other apps as well. I'll see if these notification sounds play later when I get notifications.

I'm liking these new app permissions in Marshmallow. I have to get used to these new features.

I knew there was a reason I was following this thread :)
good to know that marshmallow is going the way of protection, you have to unlock the stuff yourself.

Confirmed. Giving the app permissions to storage now allows the notification sound to play and be selected.
