Custom Ringtones Revert to "Default Ringtone"

Sometimes whenever I set custom ringtones to my contacts, the ringtones I assigned revert back to "Default ringtone". I noticed this happens whenever my phone doesn't want to read the SD card. When this happens, my Gallery is empty, but when my phone feels like reading the SD card again, the Gallery works again, but my ringtones get moved to default. How can I prevent this from happening?

Store your custom ringtones on the internal media rather than the external SD card.

On my Nexus 4 the system ringtones are kept here: /system/media/audio/ringtones, and I cannot write to it.
Does this mean that I have to root my phone in order to choose my own ringtone? No matter what I select the ringtone reverts to bloody 'Pyxis' after about 1/2 a day-or-so.

This has occurred only since the Lollipop update. Not good, Google!

All system ringtones on a device are stored in / system/media/audio. Yes you must be rooted in order to write to the /system partition.

I'd appreciate some advice on the most effective method of rooting a nexus 4. Is there a method that doesn't involve having to do a complete backup/restore of launchers, etc.?
