Help Custom ROM Suggestions

Hi Everyone,
I actually have two questions... he he. When flashing a custom rom you have to make sure that that rom was made especiall for your phone and variants, right? Those are all the precautions you need to have? Finally, can anyone suggest a custom rom for a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 SGH-T849? Thanks in advance!
 
Pretty much, yes (to your first question).

You want to find a ROM that was made specifically for your device.

Related thoughts:

- most custom ROMs don't contain a radio, but if it did and it was for a different device, it might be problematic (i.e., bad) to flash it

- ROM devs should be putting assert cross-checks in the updater-script files of the ROMs to ensure that you can't install it on the wrong device

- you should always find the MD5 or SHA1 checksum that the ROM dev publishes with the ROM and verify that you've got the same checksum on your device after you've downloaded it there; this will ensure that you're not trying to flash an incomplete or bad download

- a ROM for/from another device might have a different file system layout or size from your device (i.e., larger would be bad, missing would be bad, etc.)

- you also want a custom ROM that is compatible with the kernel that you've got installed--even for the right/correct device; otherwise, the API calls are not likely to work (i.e., Android won't operate properly)

and I'll add just one more thing.
Something that should be done before flashing anything.
Nandroid backup.

I don't know if that, (making a nandroid backup), is possible on all devices that can flash roms, but at the VERY LEAST you should know a way to get your device back to normal if flash goes wonky...whether that be your nandroid backup, or a firmware reflash.
