Help Custom ROM trouble

last night I was attempting to install viper 4.3.0 on my HTC one M8 but something appears to have gone terribly wrong and I really need some help! the installation failed at 5% and rebooted my phone, it got stuck on the HTC logo screen for about 20 minutes until I managed to get it to boot back into recovery, I should mention that I'm using TWRP 2.7.0. I checked my recovery but it appears to have been completely wiped, so now I can't even get my phone back to stock! I cannot afford a new phone so I really need to get this one fixed, please help!

I'm not an expert on this, but I guess the first question I'd have is whether you can reinstall recovery (if not TWRP then at least stock in the interests of getting you back up and running).

@doniago I'm honestly not sure whether I'd be able to, I followed youtube tutorials to root, get s-off, and unlock bootloader. so once the rom installation failed I was in unknown territory.

I tried GPM as well and it looked like it was working, it went as far as actually starting up and optimizing apps, but it got stuck there and wouldn't go any further

Step 1 - don't use a way old TWRP with known issues, get up to date -

https://dl.twrp.me/m8/twrp-2.8.7.0-m8.img.html

If you need help getting that installed properly PLEASE stop and say.

It's already obvious that those youtubes were not your best friend.

Step 2 - never expect good help on an HTC without going into the bootloader and saying everything it says from the top line down to and including the date. That's the deal, always, for minimum info required.

Please stop and give that info.

Step 3 - if on a carrier branded phone, please say which one.

Step 4 - always a terrible idea to keep trying stuff without knowing the cause of the first problem - things have a way of getting worse that way.

Step 5 - know that with s-off you are now empowered to convert your phone into a paperweight with one wrong move. See Step 4.

And for @mikedt - there's no epidemic. There are people who probably discovered through Google that our site is the place to get things fixed on an HTC M8. Sorry your HTC M8 panic didn't work out, maybe next time! :D ;)

No seriously - there's the worthless old tools still being used for root, and a lot of crappy rooting guides out there, so trouble is expected.

No big deal. :)
