Root Custom Rom Wipe?

I rooted my phone a few weeks back and have been wanting to flash a custom Rom ever since but the only thing stopping me is just the fear of losing all of my phone data, and I guess my question is I know that your need to wipe everything before you flash the Rom but is there a way to get everything back after I do the factory reset?

For anyone that has this question it may be helpful to post the answer.
NAND backup. It is an option in your recovery and will bring you back to exactly where you were before you wiped and flashed your new ROM.

Edit: ALWAYS make a NAND backup of your stock setup before flashing!
