Customization tips?

Hi all!

This is my first time posting in the forums, all the questions I had regarding my Eris were answered when I looked through its threads.

I just got my Inc2 this last weekend, I couldn't stand my Eris's random shutting off and fairly regular tantrums that didn't allow me to make calls, text, or just plain use the phone. So far, I am loving this one. The battery life is incredible and I hope, hope, HOPE it stays that way. And the phone is just plain kick-ass. :D

Although I did own the Eris for over a year (would've been much shorter if not for the impressive non-upgrade price tag for the Inc1), because of its horrible battery and overall lagginess, I did nothing by way of customization. Didn't look for ways I could've messed with it because it probably would've made me cry for all the dreams that would never come true. ;)

So I guess I am new to the better parts of Sense, and I've heard that what makes Sense awesome is that it is completely customizable. Does anybody know of any website or thread out there that can help me out with ways to customize? Any tutorials with screenshots?

I'm not sure if I would like to root the phone. Any yays or "Uhm...yeah. Nope. Don't think so"s to rooting? Does it void the warranty or make insurance useless?

Thank you! :)

What type of customization would you like to do?

Really, without root, the only customization you can do is the usual wallpaper and ring tones, etc. With Sense giving you seven screens it's a nice way to organize your icons. Plus, HTC has some nice widgets built into Sense.

root isnt as bad as everyone thinks, if something happens to your phone you can usually unroot and verizon will never know.

really the only danger is bricking, or bootlooping, which means your phone is stuck on the boot screen(s) and wont do anything else. verizon knows that only happens with root so your warranty is void. ive never had insurance on my phone so i dont know if it still covers a brick or not.

but as long as you follow directions and dont try to do things you think you cant youll be fine when rooting. and root permission allows you to change anything on your phone, notification bar/icons, boot screen, boot sound, dialpad, mms, the list goes on. you can also make your phone faster or make it slower to save battery.

You can play w/ the various home screen launchers out. I'm using GO Launcher EX instead of the default Sense UI.

I just found out that you can install Sense 2.0 skins and they'll appear in your Sense skins list (no root required.) Some of these are really great. The ones I've tried on a stock dinc2 are:

rEVOlution.apk
CommonSense.apk
AuraxTSense.apk
distINCtion.apk

Some of them are really great, with a transparent status bar and things like that. They can be downloaded from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801928

Otherwise, I've also installed LauncherPro, and you can do some nice customization with that... including custom widgets for messaging, gmail, people, etc.

I really just want to see what kinds of customization I can do.

Thanks everybody for your responses!

I'll do some more looking into rooting--is there anywhere I can go that does a pretty good of job explaining it, or should I just keep looking around in the Incredible 1 forums?

Thanks again!
