Help Customizing the dock

How do you change the apps that are in the dock on the bottom of the screen. For instance, I would like to change the stock "messaging" app for handcent.

Applications>menu>customizeable grid>menu>edit Then you can swap out the three left ones. The home/applications button is non-swappable though.
