So im trying to get a CWM on my ascend so i can back up my SD-EXT.
but when i download the files,
*the one on the wiki, comes in a img file, which i really dont get on how to install it.
*The files in the customization thread comes with many files, and i do know what to do with them, but when i do the instructions a little black screen pops up for all 3 and when i remove the battery for 10 secs. its not installed.

So whats my problem?

ill test it for you, give me the link to the cwm recovery you are trying to use.

Did you check out the link for "How to install CWR without a computer"? It works trust me. I just did the terminal method 2 weeks ago when I switched back from 5.0.2.3 to 3.0.2.8 and their suppose to be an .img

not yet, but imagine that i would be longer, but ill check it out though.
Wheres the thread located?

i install 5.0.2.3 and it works good, just backup stock 2.2 and also 3.0.2.4 works well also, where you having trouble backing ext?

install it threw the computer like any other recovery but it will be the new one.;)

So i did it but no lock, here what im doing:
take out battery
hold down Volume down, End button, and power
On the White huawei screen.
Connected it to my PC and i can hear that it was connected
then i go to the cwm 5.0.2.3 files u gave me, and run all the things that say windows on it. (p.s the last one, doesnt take more than a sec, literally)
Then i take out battery for 10 sec and boot into CWM,
and i still have the version 3.0.0.5

get rid of rom manager, but flash back to stock that way it will erase the recovery thats on there now.

This is the way I flash 3.0.2.8 Put the recovery.img (rename it to recovery.img if its not just to make it easy) on the root of your sd and Open up the Terminal Emulator and type in:

su (hit enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ recovery.img (Hit enter)
exit (eneter)

Hit your back button to exit out of the Terminal Emulator. And you are done.Reboot into recovery to just double check it flashed.

Or I learned this way after I did it the other way from PG

Install ROM Manager from the market and open it up.
Press Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Pick any of the listed recoveries
Wait til it finishes downloading
In a file explorer navigate to clockworkmod/dowload/download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/
Rename the recovery you just downloaded and add .bak to it.
Now rename the recovery.img you wish to install to the name of the recovery you just downloaded exactly. (- the .bak )
Go back to the main menu
Press Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again and select the exact same one from the list again. Since its already been downloaded it will just flash it now.
When its finished it will pop a notice up.
Now with this method the version # will be of the other device's recovery but wont affect any functions.

write exactly how your going to write it in TE

su (hit enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ recovery.img (Hit enter)
exit (enter)

^ Just like that. Theres a space between image and recovery and recovery and / and / and recovery

it gave me a message, as soon as i hit enter.
" usage: flahs_image partition file.img
is it suppose to say that?

No, I had that problem with the 5.0.2.3 too so I did it PGs way with rom manager, whihc if you have a rom manger folder already rename it to something else so it make a new one. Then once you download the recovery from rm replace it with 5.0.2.3 and rename the 5.0.2.3 the exact same thing as the one you are replacing.

I couldnt get 5.0.2.3 to back up my ext. I made like 10 back ups and it would never back it up so I switched back to 3.0.2.8 using the TE. Whihc if you do it with TE it will run a whole bunch of crap for like 2 or 3 seconds then just type "exit" and hit your back key to close the TE

okay ill try the TE with the other version of 3.0.2.8

So I tried it and it gave me the sane issue, maybe I'm doing something wrong? So I named the img file "recovery" and I put it on the root of the ad card and then i went straight to TE and typed in
" su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ recovery.img " then it gives me that message I told you about above .
Am I doing something wrong ?

What recovery are you coming from? 3.0.0.5? Because Ive done it in TE that exact way 3 times and has worked fine everytime.

remember when icarus came out when the phone first came to metro, people that had rom manager install cwm recovery thru rom maanager and it was 3.0.0.5 but to install icarus you needed to install cwm 2xxxx and no matter what they tried 3.0.0.5 would never update, either they had to wipe everything thru rom manager or revert back to stock than load cwm 2xxx manually. but 3.0.2.4 and 3.0.2.8 is the best recovery to use to backup sd ext. But i never like rom manager that well it gave alot of peoples problems install rom throught it, plus it dont wipe everything you need to wipe.;)
