Root cwm won't restore /system

i'm using v6 of cwm.

i've been using cwm and backing up and restoring and flashing roms etc. since february. no problems.

this weekend i flashed a new rom. before i did that i made a nandroid backup. as i've done at least 10 times in the past 6 months. either upgrading roms or giving a new rom a try.

i went to switch back to the rom i was using before i flashed the new one and when trying to restore i got the following message "error when trying to restore /system." i tried a different nandroid backup... same error message.

so i made a new nandroid back up of the rom i had just flashed. and then i did all the steps to flash a new rom and tried to restore from the backup i just made and i got the same error message. then i tried to do a clean install and use advanced restore > restore data... and that didn't work either.

basically after another few hours of trying different restore options it became obvious to me that the function no longer works on my cwm.

i can still make back ups and flash new roms. just can't restore anything because when trying to do so it fails trying to restore /system.

i tried to resintall cwm but got a "phone not rooted" error... allthough root checker says the phone is rooted and i'm still able to grant superuser access to programs and access my root folder etc.

someone suggested maybe i swtiched versions of cwm from v5 to v6 or something and at first i thought that might be the problem but i double checked and everything i've done has been with v6.

not sure what to do. and i'm not a developer or even that much of a phone geek. i just like cooked roms better than stock. but without being able to have a functioning recovery program the whole thing is pretty pointless.

anyone have any ideas?

thanks.

Well, that's not good at all :/

Have you tried re-rooting? On a ROM you are able to install, I would advise doing the following:
  1. Re-root using Poot.
  2. Re-download and re-install Superuser, or SuperSU.
  3. In Superuser, update the Superuser Binary through the app.
    • If you're going to use SuperSU, use Superuser to update the Superuser Binary first, then run SuperSU and update the Superuser Binary through SuperSU.
  4. Re-install CWM the long way (the method using Terminal Emulator from the Play Store), steps provided in the FAQ-Guide.
  5. ???
  6. Profit (hopefully).

If nothing else works, then it sounds like an Uber Factory Reset is in order, followed by the aforementioned steps above.

so i wish i knew more about programming so i could give you more info but here's what's going on so far...

wouldn't let me re-root but root checker and supersu both said i was rooted.

successfully reinstalled cwm but it bumped me back down to v5 from v6. can backup and restore successfully again.

i have a lot of questions but i'm not going to ask them. i'm just glad i can back-up again so i can keep messing around with these roms.

fortunately i always back pics and stuff like that so i didn't actually lose anything except for my settings.

Progress is always good! Also, feel free to ask your questions - we'll happily address them as we can. Since it did not let you re-root - were you using poot?
