Root Darky's, Doc's kitchen, new firmware or a lagfix?

Ok, so I've rooted my SGS (I-9000 with official Froyo update) using z4root, installed Titanium backup to backup my apps + data and remove bloatware, and installed Rom manager.

My phone has the DXJPA baseband version and kernel is 2.6.32.9 root@SE-S604#1. My main complaints are some lag (quadrant reading is 981) as well as a recalcitrant notification bar that doesn't want to come down every now and then. So now I'm ready to have fun with other firmware or ROMs.

I've downloaded Darky's latest ROM as it seems fast, have many features and yet prolong battery life. I'm also intrigued by the Doc and Stefunel's magical ROM kitchen as it seems more slick and customised. I did consider just applying a lagfix like OCLF or Voodoo but I've read about their flaws so I'm worried. So I wonder:

1. Darky's ROM is a very large file. If I decide I don't want certain themes or apps, can I unzip the folder, delete what I don't want and zip it up again before installing?

2. Is the magical ROM kitchen suitable for someone not very technie? I've been reading a lot and I have 3 button recovery as well as ODIN and my original firmware on the standby. If I don't select any base apps and utilities, can I install my own from mybackuppro or titanium backup?

3. Or should I just flash to JPX 2.2.1 which supposedly fixes the notification bar problem, as mentioned by someone on this forum? Hopefully it's faster than my JPA.

The mind boggles. It's fun, it's exciting and it's scary too. As I mentioned, I'm not a technie person but I'm careful, so hopefully I can get it right the first time round. :D

1. You can't. The file has to be signed and zip aligned. Simply zipping it with a compression program would not work.

2. No idea. In fact this is the first time I have heard of the Magical Rom. I know what a kitchen is, but I haven't used this rom before.

3. JPX is the non-official 2.2.1 firmware. JPY is the newest. Or at least it was the last time I checked.

Thanks, snapperfishes, for the comments. You know what? I thought that since it's new year and I'm free, I'll try #3. Now I've soft bricked my phone! Tried to flash to JPX using Odin and everything seemed well at first, but the phone wouldn't reboot by itself. And I've now lost the reboot function using the 3 buttons, even though I could do so initially. I still have the download function but ODIN doesn't seem to like me, or so it seems. I tried downloading ADB but got stuck somewhere along the line. I'm going to bring it to the local service centre tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed as the phone has been rooted. :p

The kitchen rom is here. Seems quite a delectable spread but I don't think I'll ever dare to play with my phone again! Once beaten, twice shy!

.. im all for Rom Kitchen. I was very reluctant to flash it - because statistically anything i "create" myself... breaks ;)

But it worked perfect... super fast.. and with everything in it just the way i like it

Has my tick of approval :)

I've not tried ROM Kitchen, but I cant praise Darky's ROMs enough. They completely transform the phone, and theres a whole forum full of people to help and suggest ideas etc. Plus installation is wonderfully simple!

Wouldn't trust darkys rom's any more unstable and fill of bugs that's why he updates them nearly everyday and it bricked my phone

I've gotten myself out of the fix, thankfully. :) After two weeks of being good, I dipped my toes into ROMs again, first Darky's then Doc's, which I prefer. I'm going to try do without the roms and just flash Hardcore's Speedmod plus maybe a theme next. The ROMS solved my sticky notification bar and lag issues, but now I want better battery life and fewer unnecessary apps/mods, etc. ;)

x2 on this. first time i modded my phone (aside from rooting and lagfix) and I'm very pleased with the results.
