Data and wifi

A few people told me that if i connect my phone to wifi, it would not use any data. Someone also suggested that i download 3g watchdog to track my data. I downloaded the app and this morning it showed that some data had been used even though i've been using wifi. Does anyone know why this is?

if at any point you lost the wifi connection (left the area, signal was weak, etc) phone will automatically start using 3g/4g again. What carrier on you on? most have a service threw them that you can use to check your data usage

Certain applications use your network by default regardless if you have wifi turned on. There are also carrier specific apps that use data even when you've got wifi turned on. To be absolutely certain that you're only using wifi, you have to turn on airplane mode, and then turn on wireless.

Also, if you've gone outside the area that your wireless router reaches wifi will no longer be active until you enter another area with a stored wireless connection.

I have at&t. I downloaded the watchdog app to help me track my data usage but someone told me that it's not 100% accurate.

There should be a way to have at&t text you your data usage in your settings. I have a co-worker that does it all the time.

To ensure you don't use your data just turn your 3g radio off (mobile network) that way even if you leave a wifi spot you won't start using 3g....
