Data app?

My Palm Pre Plus recently broke and I'm not eligible for an upgrade yet. I bought a gophone, the AT&T Fusion 2 to be exact thinking it would work. So I put my old sim card from the palm pre into the Fusion and it works just fine. I'm just having a hard time turning the data off though. Under the settings the data for the phone is turned off, but the 3G mark with the check under it still means it is on. Is there anyway I can fix this? Would there be an app that could help turn it off or something? I've tried everything I could think of. I just want to be able to keep the data off for now. Thanks for your help.

Hi questionmarc (love the name!), and welcome to AF :)

There are two settings in the mobile/cellular settings here: enable mobile data and enable 3G. The reason is that 3G is a network standard - you can do voice over 3G as well as data, and you can do data on 2G (slowly!) - so it's possible to use a 3G connection but not data.

So unticking data should turn off both 2G and 3G data, while unticking 3G should force you to 2G only. Why a network should disable that I don't know - there is one UK network that does, but they have no 2G coverage so it's understandable in their case, but it seems odd otherwise.

You should be able to tell whether data is active: there should be a data indicator next to your signal bars when data connection is live (vertical up+down arrows, and a letter to indicate what type of data connection, such as G, E, 3G, H). If this isn't present then data is off.

You can install a free widget "3G Watchdog" to monitor data use - if that doesn't increment it should give you some peace of mind.
