Data charges without a data plan?

I recently got a smartphone and im with Rogers Wireless . I don't have a data plan, so i go on the internet with wifi . When i turn the wifi off, it seems that there's still connection to the internet .

Does this mean i'm being charged with data usage ? And if my plan includes MMS can i turn data on for receiving/sending those without being charged for data ?

Dude, this is probably a better question for your wireless carrier but I'll say this is probably a game you don't want to play.

When I used to sell phones I would caution my customers on the side of minimizing their potential charge. I'd say buy a data package for a month or two and see how low you can keep your data -- that will answer your question without any crazy surprises.

These phones were meant to stay in connection to the network at all times. Even something as simple as a widget on your home screen updating can run up your bill if you don't have the data package to support it.
