Help Data connection drops. All the time. Anyone else?

I tend to agree with you. What is catching my eye is the spike in reporting of this problem over the last week or two. My bet is on verizon rolling out some sort of network update that for some reason is affecting the Maxx. I can't believe it sim cards going bad en masse, but something that Verizon has done to affect this phone. It may be affecting other phones too, but since this is a Maxx thread, we assume it's just affecting the Maxx. If it is something verizon is doing, then this problem is going to become more widespread as the update spreads across their network.

we've got a Bionic, an Iphone4s, and an Incredible2 all in this house as well as my Maxx....and none of them are having problems (albeit only the Bionic is 4g).

and likewise, why the huge spike with this problem in just the past two weeks? every maxx forum i can find online has a thread or three on this very topic, so it's just Android Forums members that are barking about it.

what i CAN'T understand is why ALL razr maxx owners aren't experiencing this problem? i've had THREE maxx's....using a total of FIVE various sim cards in them, and they've all had the connectivity problem.

Ok, I have been reading a lot of posts and noticed ICS leaks are not having this problem, and then the text today from verizon about Verizon IM not being supported with ICS. So for an experiment, I went into settings, applications, and running services and noticed VZW IM was running. I killed that process and noticed that my signal strength is not fluctuating like before, and speeds are better and more stable. This process will start up every time you reboot your phone. Now is this just all coincidence? Maybe, but worth a try. I will see how my phone acts the rest of the night.

i'm gonna try that right now.

and btw....can/does the VZW IM app relaunch itself at anytime other than initial rebooting?

thanks.

well, call the paper, cuz i've got new headlines for tomorrows issue! lol

*that is....i'm 6 minutes in to having the VZW IM turned OFF and i've had nuttin but blue, full strength connectivity the entire whopping 6 minutes. and don't laugh....that's about FIVE more than i've had in a row for the past two weeks!

i HOPE this really does fix the problem.....and if it does, i'm buying you (wxman2003) a beer (or three!) the next time you're in town.

(and yeah....I know i'm getting waaay ahead of myself here, but geez, it IS working! lol)

well....it's now been about 13 minutes with the VZW IM off, and i'm starting to get disconnects off and on.

the solid blue, 5 bars across the top has turned to white, and i'm getting the 'data connection has been lost' message.

damn......

Its not the phone, the SIM card or an app, its how the radio is connecting to Verizon's towers on this build after the update. I have not had the data drop issue at all running the .210 build of the ICS leak. I would imagine the issues will stop one the official OTA is released.

Ah Crap. Was worth a shot. I'm still getting a steady 3 bars, when before it was dropping to 0 to 1.

I'm still confused why this doesn't affect every Maxx phone then.

likewise.

i wonder if some people just don't use their data very much after all, or they've just not noticed the dropping? (dunno HOW that could be....but anything's possible)

That's probably the case. Since you can still send out text messages and make phone calls, most people would not notice the problem.

Do you own or know a friend with a Maxx that inst being effected by this?

Yes. My phone will fluctuate in signal strength quite a bit at home, but I don't lose data. I have 2 friends with the Maxx that don't lose data. I do a lot of video and music streaming and so far so good.

Well first off, signal bars only indicate voice signal strength, not data. some people don't notice they are losing data because it goes in and out and sometimes will work ok for awhile. Maybe they are not using data when they are experiencing problems.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess then I may be one of the Maxx users that do not have this data problem. But since I killed that app my DL speeds at home have gone from a consistent 4 to 5 Mbs to 10. I wonder if this is a regional issue. Perhaps not all 4G areas are affected by this problem.

i'm not holding my breath just yet....but....

i've had my phone on 'CDMA only' for the past hour, and voila: NO PROBLEMS with connectivity.

i've been streaming for a solid hour and i've had nuttin but solid BLUE across the top, with zero hiccups.

heading to bed now, but will have at it again in the morning.

and frankly, here in So Cal, i've always had (what has seemed to be) relatively quick 3g speeds, and there isn't a lot of diff between it and 4g...so, i can live with this...for now. but sure, i'm paying for a 4g phone, so shit, lemme have 4g, eh!

well, i've had the phone connected for about an hour straight this morning, and no problems...albeit again, at 3G.

so, if this keeps up today, i'm gonna figure that the 4g connectivity is thee problem here (thus eliminating the phone itself, the sim card, and any concerns for which phase the Moon is in today, etc).

hopefully VZ gets a fix for this SOON...but at least i can get online in the meantime.

I think you are right about it being a 4G issue only and on Verizon's side of things. After the SIM card change I had a solid 3 days of perfect service and then data drops started again for both my wife and I but this time we noticed it seems to mostly happen between 10:00am and 2:00pm.(pacific time) So yesterday we tried what you are doing we switched her phone to CDMA only and I left mine on 4G. Her phone maintained a solid connection with no drops all day and mine lost connection multiple times.

well then, that makes two of us that have had the same experience....so i'm leaning ever more so that it's verizon and their 4g rig that's holding us up.

thanks.

I finally had a data drop on this ICS leak but it was only a second before it kicked back in and worked fine. I had 7-8 drops a day that would last minutes on GB. Not only that but my speeds are back to normal on this leak. Seeing 16-18 down and 10-12 up again. I think whatever Verizon is doing to prepare for the official OTA of ICS is messing with things. Glad I installed this leak though as I was about ready to cancel my service.

I've had the same issues on 3g only and on 4g so I'm not sure about that

i'm on my fifth hour of connectivity w/o a loss. so far, so good. but sure, anything's possible at this point, so i'm not 100% sure going to 3g only is a total cure for me, but again, so far it has been. (hell, i'll take 80% at this point! lol)

prior to going to 3g only on my phone last night, i couldn't hold connectivity on 4g for more than a minute or two (really!), and frequently couldn't achieve ANY connectivity. but again, an hour in to 3g only last night, and five more this morning/afternoon without a hiccup has me smiling....so far! lol

Still not sure why this happens to some but not all. I have a stock Maxx, and have never experienced the problems others are having where data drops every few minutes. If it was a nationwide network issue, then all Maxx's would be messing up with data drops. But that's not occurring so that can't be it. Perhaps your local network is the issue. I know if there is a time drift on either your phone or your network, there would be a lot of data drops. But if it was a network time drift, all 4G phones would suffer. But that isn't happening either. There could be a lot of different things causing this issue from how your email is set up whether push or not, type of email account, global data roaming on or off, weather app such as weather bug, Facebook, IM apps, and so on. Could be a bad sim, could be a bad chip, could be a bad antenna. Again, I'm not so sure it's the network. IMO if the network is causing a problem on your Maxx, but not on others, then the phone has to be defective.

that would certainly seem to make sense, but how to explain all three of my phones (over a 7 day span) having the same problem? and others here have gone through 7-8 phones...all with the same problem.

my (first) Maxx initially worked fine when i got it 14 days ago....then my problems started up in Oakland, CA, a week ago, and continued over to Sacramento, to Lake Tahoe, and all the way back home here to So Cal....and i've had two phone exchanges since (total of 3 phones)....all in the past 7 days.

maybe a west coast 4g problem with verizon?

and since both Motorola and Verizon have admitted to recent problems, i'm still leaning that it's not my specific 3 phones (or any of the other phones here in question). i dunno what else to think.

This is one of the most baffling problems I have seen with any phone ever. Never seen something this bizarre with just one style of the same phone. There is nothing different between the Razr and the Razr Maxx. Same antennas, same LTE chip, same os, same layout, but only a different size battery. Yet the Razr does not have this issue. So could the battery be causing these problems? Literally, that is all that is different between the models. Is the backplate causing problems, since it is different than the razr? Is that capable of affecting the 4G signal? Is the heat from the bigger battery not dissipating as quickly and thus affecting the internal parts?
