Help Data connection issues with TB

AlucardDE

Newbie
Anyone else having issues with the data connection speeds changing constantly from 4G to 3G to 1X to no data (in the same place...my house for example which is in the 4G coverage area). I was on the phone with Verizon Wireless Tech support for 45 minutes this morning. They are sending me a refurb TB since I am past the 14 day return policy (bought it on launch day - March 17th). I am hoping the "new" phone will resolve this issue. I had no problems until the last few days. Oh and one other thing...the phone factory reset ITSELF yesterday!

Yes this is a well documented problem with the tbolt in some areas. I don't think the new phone will help or it didn't with me and most other cases I have read about.

I was told be verizon engineers that it was because I was in the very middle of towers in my area and it was having problems determining which signal to pick up. I was further told they were going to adjust the 3g signal direction on towers and that should solve my problem.

The wierd thing is that 2 miles in every direction of my house my 4g works fine. The only solution I have found is to download LTE on/off and turn the 4g off when at my house. This allows me to get a constant 3g signal. Not acceptable for a long term solution but I hope they fix the problem soon.

That is the precise reason I returned my TB. Hell, I was in the Verizon store and it wouldn't get anything but 1X while everyone else had 3G connections. The tech tried several things and it wouldn't go to 3G for anything. Was eating 50% of my battery every 2 hours or so. I could literally watch the battery power drop every few minutes.

I was fine for the first few weeks with my connecton (4G/3G in my house) and 4G/3G where I was somewhere else. This morning (haven't received my replacement phone yet), I have only 2 bars lit (no 1x, 3G or 4G) and it has been this way all morning (at my house). I will update when I receive the replacement phone, I hope it resolves it.

Yes, several threads on this issue. I wouldn't mind if it just dropped to 3G and stayed there, but the 3G to 1X and then nothing but 2 signal bars isn't going to cut it. Especially since these issues weren't present with my previous 3G phone. I think it's network related myself.

Out of curiosity though, do people tend to notice this more when they are using their Wifi hotspot or connected to a computer? I found turning off 4G helps with the problem (as someone's already mentioned), but I agree that as a long term solution, it's not a viable solution. Another thing I've noticed, when it strays into just bars, my location gets all weird and tells me I'm in Gary Indiana or somewhere in New York, which I'm actually in TX. It's not exactly the neighboring city/town, which may have something to do with what's going on.

Can you elaborate on how you think it's a network problem?

The reason I ask is because while in the VZ store my TB was stuck on 1X while the other 5 or 6 phones that the tech held directly next to it were getting 3G just fine.

I would surmise that if it were a network issue, all of the phones would have been stuck on 1X.

I haven't seen it "change" from 4G to 3G unless I manually change it via the LTE OnOff app. I have noticed that the arrows underneath the "4G" or "3G" constantly change. Sometimes they're both off, sometimes they're both on, sometimes one is on but not the other. Never having had a smart phone before, I don't know if that's normal, or if that means my phone is constantly trying to find a connection, or what.

All normal

I'm having this same issue as well, and was wondering if it was because I was rooted, but it sounds like that's not the case.

If this doesn't get fixed I'll probably be returning my TBolt. The coverage is worse than with my Incredible.

Well I am still waiting for my replacement phone, I was able to get a decent connection for a minute or two and downloaded the LTE On/Off app. Switching strictly to 3G seemed has kept it at 3G and no connection drops since I have switched (over an hour or so ago). I do think this is a network issue IMHO. I was fine for 2 weeks with 4G with occasionally 3G drops at times at my house, but all of the sudden this eratic connection speed changes to consistent no data connection speeds the past few days is very frustrating. Of course at the Verizon store, 4G on the phone is not an issue.
