Help Data Connectivity Issue (Straight Talk)

Hi all,

I have an HTC One M8 Developer Edition currently activated on Straight Talk (via ATT). Every day or two, I am suddenly unable to send/receive email OR reach the webmail website in the browser, but ONLY when connected via the cellular data network - over WiFi everything works fine.

Last night I factory reset the phone and installed only Solid Explorer, but today it's still exhibiting the same issue.

When experiencing this issue, all other websites and services that I try are working fine. It is only access to the email servers over LTE that seems to be affected.

My APN settings are configured according to straighttalkbyop dot com / program.php (sorry, forum won't let me post a link.)

Any thoughts? I have called ST but their CS reps can't/won't do anything. I am suspicious that ATT may be blocking traffic to the email server but if so I am not sure how to prove it or resolve it.

Please help! This is the only thing wrong with this otherwise amazing phone!

Some additional information:

  • Email provider is Roadrunner (rochester.rr.com)
  • Same behavior with both stock mail client and K-9
  • I was able to send a test message after changing the outgoing mail server to mobile-smtp.roadrunner.com

Still I am unable to reach anything in the rochester.rr.com domain when on the 4G network.

Thanks for looking!

Try setting your outgoing port to 587. Then try 487 and 26. Some ISP's block port 25 from specific 3rd party servers/services (which may include ST) which can cause you a lot of hassle. They say this is to reduce spam...In reality it affects a lot of legitimate users.

( I am assuming you are using POP3 and not IMAP)

This solution is a long shot because you are also saying the actual domain is inaccessible, which sounds like a problem between the ST servers and .rr servers... If that is the case it is almost impossible to get either company to actually check on the issue since they are usually too busy blaming each other!

...Just another suggestion. Perhaps we will have some more people chime in

Hey, thanks for the reply. After changing my outgoing server to mobile-smtp.roadrunner.com I am able to send emails okay (with port 25 or 587), but I cannot receive email at all. I just got off the phone with Time Warner and verified all my other settings are right. She said some carriers may block access to their webmail.

Yes, ST support is so completely useless that they will not or cannot even tell if it's blocked, let alone try to do anything about it. I still suspect the source of the problem is with AT&T, and they won't help me since I am not a direct customer. This all worked fine with my old phone on Verizon.

I'm having the same exact problem with my N5 on ST (ATT) in the Albany, NY area. My coworker has an iPhone 5s on ST and I had him test the RR webmail URL with the same result. Another coworker with the 5s on ATT can connect just fine. This leads me to believe that it's ST blocking the RR domain but their support is useless.

I started having problems about 3 weeks ago. Not sure where to go from here.

FYI the URL here in Albany is webmail.nycap.rr.com

Native email client and webmail both will not work unless on WiFi. 3G and LTE both tested.

Interesting, I guess it would not be surprising that it was ST. Even though they assured me on the phone that they don't block anything, I do doubt the competency of their support personnel.

Until a better option comes up I am forwarding my RR email to my gmail account. Over time I may migrate everything to gmail and stop using RR mail altogether.
