Help Data consumption has gone through the roof!

I had my Galaxy S2 for several months, and my data consumption was very low. I could get by with AT&T's 300 mb a month plan. This was possible because I was careful to keep my data consumption limited to times when I was in WiFi networks, mainly at home and at the office.

Suddenly, in the last month, I have started consuming huge amounts of data, and have used more than 600 mb in the last couple weeks. I try to be careful to make sure all apps are closed when I leave the WiFi area, but still, I occasionally will discover my phone is feeling very hot in my pocket when I am at the supermarket or something. My guess it that these are the times when the data is being consumed. I check my phone, but usually find only apparently innocuous apps running, like the photo gallery or NY times.

I can't figure out which app or apps are using all the data, and I wonder if there is a data-tracking app that will tell me which app is using the most data.

I also am trying to figure out how to uninstall apps from my phone. I can remove the icons from the home screen, but I am not sure at all that the app itself has been removed, and I don't know how to see a list of all the apps that are on the phone. For instance, I saw that Weather Underground was gulping data, so I removed the icons, but I'm not sure it's really gone from the phone.

Failing all else, I guess I'll just have to do a factory reset of the phone and start re-adding my apps one by one until I find the culprit.

Please, can somebody help me find a solution to this problem?

Firstly are you on the new ICS system? If so use Task manager, hold the home button, swipe apps to the right to close them. You can set what is using the data regularly and what regulated by manual updates. Also, look in the settings for the data usage. set a limit and a notification when data reaches a point. Accounts and sync, turn this off. They only need to update when you check it, not all the time. Lastly, location services, Ive found that the only one that can remain checked is the Location and Google Search. That allow you to use the web and search without other apps using the background option. However there is some data usage on this one. to stop it turn it off.. Only problem, if you need to search a location its slow and inacurate unless you turn this on as well as gps. But usually your notified if something is blocking your path. You can set a short cut on the desk top if your using a launcher. I use Go Launcher Pro so I have many short cut tabs throughout my phones screens, including go sms pro. Feel free to ask any questions if I confused ya on this.

I am having the same problem since i have upgraded to official ICS from ATT. when investigated i found out that since the upgrade it doesnt connect to certain Wi-Fi's, i use my Office/Datacenter and home Wi-Fi most of the time, after the upgrade i noticed it only connects successfully to my home wi-fi and keeps saying out of range for my office and datacenter which i was able to use before with no issues and other employees are using with no issue. i have already tried to delete and re-connect to the respective routers but no luck it keeps saying out of range, and because of that at those locations it utilizes my data plan and my consumption has jumped up. can someone please help me with this, I need to connect to my wifi in other locations. for now, i disable my data connection when i am at office or datacenter to control my data usage, thats a major inconvenience.

Thanks
