Help Data costs

hi, I want to completely stop the data costs on my Htc Desire S. How do I turn everything off (internet, e-mail and all synchronization of apps)?

I dont't want to tell the internet supplyer to make a barrier, but I want to be able to use my connection manually.

Please help me!

a) Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network - uncheck this setting.

b) Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network > Enable always-on mobile data - verify this setting is unchecked.

With these 2 settings unchecked, you should not be able to connect to the internet via 2G/3G; there'll be zero draw on your data plan.

To turn on mobile data, you could do a) above to check the setting or drag down the Notification screen > Quick settings > Mobile Network - ON. You can turn it off this way, too.

Alternatively, and quicker still, you could set up a widget to switch between Mobile data ON/OFF. Long press on a space on your Home screen > Widget > Settings > Mobile Network > Select

To monitor your data usage (or lack of), you can install an app like 3G Watchdog from Android Market. This will help reassure you of the above settings. It does me!

thank you!

I've now turned off "Mobil network" - one question: can I use my own internet connection without turning on "Mobile network"?

Yes. Both work independently of each other.

HTC privileges wifi connection above mobile data - if you have both on and connect to wifi, then your phone will only connect to the internet via wifi. When you disconnect from wifi, it will revert back to mobile data, if you have it on.

You don't have to use mobile data at all, although some network provider services may require a mobile data connection on their initial setup.

hi again, another question: can I, like with apps, mount the SD card to the PC and drag an firmware update into the root of the card and put it back in the phone and open Astro file mgr to install the update?

In short, no. Official firmware updates can be done OTA (Over The Air) - once the phone detects they're available, it will download and install them by itself.

Or, when available, HTC will release updates on its website for your specific (branded) phone. With these, you download the file to your PC and then follow the instructions - the ROM will install via the USB cable. You won't need to use ASTRO File Manager or any other app on the phone.

By watching my data costs, the bill has gone up a couple cents; I have done what you suggested. What can have caused the data costs to have gone up? Do I have to tell my internet supplier to stop my data traffic?

You need to go through all your apps that are likely to sync data (weather, gmail, facebook, twitter, news, stocks etc) and turn off or change frequency of background data sync.
Most of these apps are set to default quite frequently, so that will help data costs and battery impact if you set them to manual or every 4 hours for example. It can be noted that some can be turned off altogether too.

Editing sync frequency can be done by going into each app and searching the menu options.

What are you using to monitor your mobile data costs? Some mobile costs appear on your bill a couple of days after use. This is why I use 3D Watchdog as it tells me immediately how much I've used.

Verify the following:

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network is unchecked.

Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network settings > Uncheck Data roaming and Enable always-on mobile data.

You can, though, make another block by creating a 'null' Access Point Name. Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile network settings > Access Point Names > Menu > New APN > Name > Enter a name, > APN > Enter a name, > Back > Check (blue radio button) your newly created APN on the list of APNs.

Remember that if you want to use mobile data, then you'll need to go to this screen to check the network provider setting.

Another alternative is this -

Dial *#*#4636#*#* which will take you to Testing > Phone information > Menu > More > Disable data on boot > Reboot your phone.

Remember what you did, though, as you need to go through this procedure again to turn mobile data on.

Depends what you mean by 'network connection'. If you're just referring to mobile data/3G, then you can do this via wifi.

If you don't want any kind of internet/data connectivity going in or out of your phone, then you'll first need an app like ASTRO File Manager on your phone.

You'll also have to enable your phone to allow .apk files from unknown sources, too. Menu > Settings > Applications > and check Unknown sources.

Next, download the app you want (.apk file) to your computer, then transfer it to the phone's SD card via the USB cable.

Then find the .apk file on your phone with ASTRO File Manager and select the file. Finally, follow the instructions to install the app.
