Data Ideas for Nexus 7

Just jotting down some ideas for getting data while out and about. Please contribute your suggestions to this thread.

If your phone has a data plan, try Foxfi. http://foxfi.com

datajack - myfi for $89, 1gig $29

virgin mobile - myfi $99, 2gig/mo $35

walmart - myfi $119, 500mb $25

toast - myfi $75, 1gig $25

ting - hotspot $119, 1gig $24

truconnect - myfi $99, .04/mb with add'l $4.99 connection fee during a month in which you use it

karma - free to low cost roaming wifi, share your wifi with another and receive more free. Coming soon.


freedompop - device is an iPhone sleeve, offers free or near-free wifi, coming soon.

fon - you buy a mini-router to share some of your own, and connect to others for free. If you don't have one, you can connect to others by making an account and buy data by "credit card or SMS" according to their website.
 
Karma sounds interesting.

VM is useless for streaming any media to the N7 but fine for basic connectivity. More often than not, the network is too slow. I use my VM Moto Triumph as a hotspot for the N7.
 
Been using of late blue tooth tethering and it seems to be easier on my phones battery than setting up WiFi hot spot, though it might be slower?

Just wondering which you guys prefer.

is this an out of the box feature, or do I need to get an app?
i have a GNex and have been using the wifi hotspot.

I hear ya! I was thinking it might not be a bad idea to pick up a couple of extra phone batteries from amazon for $5 or so to keep charged and onhand.. hotspot can eat up a battery as most of us know. My car has two cigarette lighters though, so driving isn't a problem.

Cricket - Device $99, $30/mo for 2gig, $45 4gig, $65 8gig looks like these run on 3G but I'm not sure
 
Took my kid to Walmart for ifrogz and saw that they are selling two hotspots with deals that only work if you buy them *at* Walmart.

Virgin mobile: device $149. $20 1G/mo (3G). $35 "unlimited" (4G)

T-Mo: device $114. $25 1.5.G/30 days. $35 3.5G/60 days.
$50 5G/60 days (all 4G)
 
If you are looking for a good MiFi plan this is what I would do:

1. Buy an unlocked 4G T Mobile phone for cheap. (Maybe buy an extra battery or two)
2. Sign up for the $30 Monthly 4G Pre Paid plan. (Includes 5GBs per month, 100 mins, unlimited text)
3. Use FoxFi for wireless tether.
4. Enjoy a cheap MiFi Hotspot.
 
There are still usable $50 discount codes for Ting floating around that can be used on the 3G/4G mifi units. I bought mine about 3 weeks ago and a code from months ago on Fatwallet still worked.

*nod* I have been aware of this plan but have also heard that it's a bit tricky. You have to make sure that you are using the right link and I know nothing about GSM or SIM cards, having been with VM for almost 5 years now.

Could you recommend a cheap T-Mo phone to look for on ebay? Does it need to be android, or do smartphones or dumbphones work? I'm assuming android for foxfi? Thanks!
 
I saw VM hotspot cards on amazon for $60 sounds like a deal to me, my Nokia5800 has a teathering app making it a hotspot on TM too. May explore that some more soon, but don't need it yet. When I am in the car I am driving!

Wow you really have to watch the spell checker on this N7!

When I looked at Ting's website, it appeared as though they charge PER device. Is this really true, and how would they know if another device accesses the dataplan?

When I'm in the car, I'm driving and lost. I need my GPS!

So far, I'm sticking with $25 VM, but really eyeballing that $30 T-Mo plan. We'll see.

The recent software upgrade to my nokia 5800 provided its gps with any maps in the world downloadable to the phone and it works great including voice with navigation. A smarter choice is a dedicated gps with lifetime map updates like a tomtom or just use the N7 gps and remember to save the map area head of time where you need road information.
