We are travelling from Australia to Europe soon and don't want to find a large bill when I return home. How do I turn off everthing that will incur large cost. I want to use my phone for wi-fi and text messages

Well, text you need data, and data is what will cost you, if you turn data off, then you can use wifi but cannot text, you can email though, so that might be your best option

Welcome to AF, Glenda! While you can't send texts via your carrier's text messaging service, you can use Google Talk to send texts to other Android phones over wifi if that is an acceptable option.
