Data usage on GNex vs Nexus 7

So I'm loving my N7 and when I'm out and about, want to take it with me. Of course, loads of places have wifi, but what if they don't? I have the option of using my phone as a portable wifi hotspot.

But I'm concerned. Will my Nexus 7 use more data than my phone? Or is it based purely on whatever I'm downloading (eg. a YouTube vid will use the same data on both devices or less on one than the other? A website will use the same data on both devices or less on one than the other?)

Data is data regardless of screen size of device. If you are tethering, more apps allow you on the fly monitoring of data downloaded or sent.
