Help data usage

Hi! I have an Android Droid Turbo 5.1. I hope that's right...I got it off the About Phone page in my settings. Anyway, the other day we were at home and my husband and I were both using our phones. He was playing games and I was on Facebook. All of a sudden we get an alert from Verizon that we were at 90% of our data usage for the month. Our son was on the desk top and he said that the power to the surge protector we have the router plugged into had cut off, so we had no router and he had no internet connection on the desk top. We changed the alert on our phones so now we are warned at 50%. But is there a way that we can make the phones work like the computer - when the router turns off, we loose internet? We have had our plan with Verizon for almost 15 years and that one does not offer unlimited data. We could get a plan with unlimited data, but it would cost us another $75 per month and we are already paying way too much. Unfortunately, because we live in a rural area surrounded by mountains Verizon is the only service provider we can get. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You can turn mobile data on and off so you aren't using data from your carrier. To turn off mobile data the process varies by phone, but should be similar to:

Open the Menu.
Click Settings.
Tap Data Usage or Wireless and Networks.
Look for any Mobile Network options or something similar to that.
Unselect Data, or Network Connection, or similar.

Some apps turn mobile data back on by themselves so you'll still need to double check sometimes.

Hey,
I have a 2 gB/month plan.
My daughter, wife, and my MiFi router don't use but maybe 350 kB/month....

We use WiFi only.... we turn DATA off and leave it off....
the only time it gets used is if I need to access Google or maybe FB when I am bored here at the hospital.... baby sitting the wife...... ( long sob story, don't ask )

I found out in a hurry though, that FB is the worst DATA monger in the universe.
it went thru 2 gB of data in about 3 hours, I got a splash alert that I had been charged $15 for the next 1 gB chunk. huh???
what happened to the 50%, 75% and 90% alerts?????
they are back, and I have a new plan as of 4 PM yesterday.

it is now 4 gB/month with roll over data from Last Month if NOT used....
so, that means during our normal 0.35 gB monthly use, I can splurge when on holiday the next month with 7.6 gB of data...

not a bad plan, and it is only $10/month more than what I had.

FB's penchant for downloading all Images is horrendous on burning up data....
damn good reason to forget FB ever existed.

Now, for your power problem.

Go buy a 1500 watt UPS and hook it up to the Main PC and the Internet Modem.

that is what I have, and it will run the PC, monitor, modem, and WiFi router for 30 minutes....
mean while, it screams its' bloody head off to alert you that the power is gone....

so, I get up, turn off the PC and Monitor.... now the Internet stays alive for hours and hours....
That little ADSL modem does not draw enough power for the UPS to even know it is there.

Best of all, no scrambled hard drives because the PC was shut down improperly with the power loss.

a good UPS has a USB cable with a tiny little program that will automatically cause the PC to shut down gracefully
