Hello all!

I am coming over from the Iphone world and have a new Samsung S6. I am on a limited GB data plan and need to make sure I turn off all apps and or anything that could be using my data when I am not actively using the phone. Even though I have closed out all apps on the phone (messenger in particular) I am getting constant notifications from Facebook and it shows my status as online. Is this using up my data although the app is closed out on my phone?

Help! :) Please and thank you.

If you open the Facebook app and explore its settings, there may be an option to disable the automatic refresh; I use a third-party FB app and it has such an option, so that notifications of new posts etc only come in when I open the app and request a refresh.

You can turn Fb notifications off within the app. Just go to app settings (it should be near the bottom of the menu........

One option to consider is to download an app called Greenify. It will hibernate Facebook so it's not running in the background. I use it for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Keep in mind that some apps really do need to remain active in the background and may consume small bits of data.

Make sure you turn sync off and only use it when you need to or are on wifi. You can turn data off completely at night or at other times when you don't need it as well.
Their are people who will probably give you much much better support than me, but I hope my suggestions help.

You can disable background data on an app by app basis so they wont use your mobile data when you're not using them. Some phones might not have this option though.

1. Go to your phones Settings menu.
2. Tap Data Usage
3. Scroll down to the app and tap it.
4. Scroll down and tap to check Restrict Background Data.

For some apps you wont get some updates/notifications after after doing this when you're not using that app. Also I believe that only shows apps that have already used data so with a brand new phone there might not be many apps listed yet.

Or you can disable all background data > Settings > Data Usage > Menu > Restrict Background Data. If Restrict Background Data is turned on here you wont have the option to disable it for each app as described above. There is also an option to turn off Auto Sync Data.
