Data use?

I currently have a great little app called Tunein radio, which allows me to listen to radio stations all over the world. I have the app installed on both my phone and my tablet. My phone is on Tesco network, which has a monthly limit on data usage, although when I'm at home I use my home wifi. I also use my tablet on my home wifi network.

My question is: is the Tunein radio app using a lot of data against my monthly limit when I listen to it OFF my home network? My monthly statement from Tesco never tells me how much data I'm actually using each month, so I don't know if I'm nearing the limit or not. So far, I haven't actually gone over it, however. I'd just like to listen to it more than I do now.

Thanks.

Any type of streaming will use a good amount of data if you do it often enough or for a long period of time. Video will use more than audio, but you can still hit the limit if you use audio streaming constantly, particularly if your monthly limit isn't that high.
One thing you can do within TuneIn Radio is to select a different stream, so you can use less data. The app will usually default to the fastest available stream which can be 128K, but there will often be smaller streams available. Try them and see what the lowest bit rate is that your ears can tolerate.
You can also go into the settings menu of your phone to track your total data use and figure out how much you are using.

When you are streaming via WiFi you are not using your mobile data allowance. You're using your home internet connection.

If you have Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) a data monitor is built-in. If using 2.3 or earlier there are many data monitor apps to choose from, both free and paid.
