Help Dead browser and Proxy settings

mlaramore

Lurker
I downloaded an app called HTTP Proxy from the Android Market, which is supposedly compatible with the Optimus T. After installing the app, and setting up the proxy, my browser no longer works. I tried using the app to revert to the original settings, as well as uninstalling the app, and installing a new browser (Dolphin). Nothing works, I cannot browse at all on the phone, regardless of the browser I use, though apps like FaceBook and IMDB still work without a problem. Anyone know how I can fix this issue?

"Using the app to revert to the original settings" - does that refer to the HTTP proxy app, or the browser? have you tried a reset of settings in the browser itself? (in the browser something like - menu button > settings > Reset to default)

If that doesn't work maybe try clearing the browser's cache and/or data through manage applications in phone settings.

Update: The Dolphin browser actually works over WiFi, but not 3G. As I am not always going to have WiFi access, hopefully someone can provide some advice on fixing that.

I have already done all of the above, to no avail. At least I can browse using WiFi with Dolphin now (though not the original Browser loaded with the phone), but 3G is still a no go.

The only other thing I would think that would work is to do a factory reset of the phone. You would loose all your apps and stuff - so make sure you have whatever you can backed up and synced. That's definitely a way to reset all the phone settings.

I am kinda thinking factory reset is the way I am going to have to go with it. I also just downloaded Opera for the phone, and it is usable in wifi as well. The good thing about Opera is that it has configurable proxy settings, which I am still wrestling with.

I have also thought about rooting the phone as a possible solution, but I am a Smartphone n00b, and don't want to mess up and brick the phone.

Rooting is kinda scary until you do it. At least that was my experience with my phone. It sounds like there is a pretty simple root method for the Optimus. And if anything goes wrong, there is probably a way to restore it.

Fortunately I won't have to go that route just yet, and can avoid factory reset as well. Once I figured out the proxy settings for Opera, I got it working in both 3G and WiFi, so all is well. Opera rocks!
