after i open message app, whether to read or send, it still shows up when i hold down the home screen button to see which app is running. how come it won't close by itself like other apps?

Holding down the HOME button shows you a list of recently used applications.

That has nothing to do with whether the app is running, cached, or closed.

no it's running in the background, i have to click the exit button to close

In 2.3 go to Settings > Applications > Running services... this shows the app's that are currently running.
Now press Menu > select "Show cached processes"... this shows app's that are waiting in the sidelines, so to speak.

This excellent article by ardchoille explains it better:-

Hope this helps. :D

I dont think you can stop messaging from working. If you opened it recently of couse it will show up when you long press home button. Just ignore it and after you have used a number of apps, you wont see it anymore. Even if you use another messaging app like handcent, received messages will still show up on default (you can turn of notifications though).

As I said, holding down the HOME button shows recently used applications. It might be running in the background, but this is not how you would check.

See the post from ironass above.

1) Is it actually running in the background? (You haven't convinced me that you have looked in the proper place to even know this.)

2) More importantly, if it is running in the background, why do you think this is a problem?
