My default notification sounds even when there's no reason to notify me. If I put it on silence then that causes me to have to continue checking the device to see if I do have a notification. How can I fix this issue?

If you get a notification in the notification pulldown when it sounds, long-press the notification and you'll get an App info button. Press that and you'll see which app is causing the notification.
You may also hearing the "loss of signal" sound. There's no way to disable that one that I know of. (There may be an Xposed module that does it, but since I never lose signal these days, I haven't looked for one.)
