Default timer reset when not in focus

Hello everybody!
I'm using my Galaxy S2 for 3 months now and i'm very happy with it and the android OS. I'm often using the timer of the build-in clock to cook but I've noticed if I open another application the timer resets it self after a while. This is very annoying and very stupid so I supposed maybe I'm using to do something wrong, but I couldn't find ANY information googling.
On top of that the alarm of the timer is at a very low volume and I cannot hear it although in the settings the volume is at it's maximum.
