already know about the defrag app BUT: the phone is so fragged up that even though I get rid of programs I get the message: NOT ENOUGH SPACE.

Hi, What phone do you have, which version of Android and which carrier do you use? We could help you more easily (and better) if you were to register for the Forum.
If the phone has limited memory, you might want to root it so you can move/link apps to a SD card, and remove carrier/manufacturer installed bloatware.
