i was just wondering if anyone has the defy working on at&t without any sort of data plan of any kind. i have unlimited messaging and around wifi all the time besides when im in the car. i had an unlocked mytouch 3g slide and didnt get any message about a data plan. if it will automatically put a data plan on it im just going to use it as an ipod touch. but i want to know before school starts so i can use it as a phone and an ipod in school.

I've been using my defy on AT&T for a few months now with absolutely no data plan.
Currently sending this from Wi-Fi at my house, and it works like a charm!
I also have unlimited messaging, although since I turn off mobile data, I am yup unable to do picture messages unless I turn on mobile data for the download/upload.

Is there a way to ensure that I wont get charged with a data plan? Like anything I have to or should turn off? And what did you use to unlock it? Also I just have people send pictures to my email it works.

you can lookup websites to do it..I have unlocked most of my other phones but didnt do my defy usually costs around 20.00 you send them

and they send you unlock code you put in to remove carrier lock
ALL unlocking does is will allow
you to use any SIM CARD TYPE provider ATT or Tmobile ect.. with any sim card phone
My T-mobile defy would be usable on AT&T when unlocked...
or BB TORCH from AT&T for use on TMobile or I Phone on Tmobile...
Rooting and droid and Jailbreaking and Iphone are not the same as an UNLOCK..Unlock just removes CARRIER SPECIFIC LOCK...Unbinds from ONE carrier..
Will the phone data cross over for this phone? had some issue using BB TORCH with T-Mob. worked GREAT as a phone and the WIFI ..but when it came time to do data it still seemed bonded to AT&T data network..
Some phones I dont think will let you...
3G is different signal from Edge and GPRS and GSM...3G HSPDA
