how do i locate deleted text messages

You don't - unless you had an SMS backup app running they are gone.
The actual messages are stored in a database file in /data/data/com.providers.android.messaging (from memory, can't guarantee absolute accuracy). Unless the phone is rooted you can't access that area yourself.
