Help Deleted Videos Still Show In Gallery

ADG1

Newbie
I copied a couple of videos from my computer to the DCOM folder via usb. I then deleted one of the videos (also via usb) and now there are three icons in the gallery for videos - one for the one currently installed and two for the one I deleted. I tried "deleting" them, but they remain. I've rebooted several times.

Does anyone know if it's possible to delete these "ghost" icons? Thanks much.

Have you tried clearing the gallery cache/data in applications?

Thanks for the reply. The cache shows 0 and the clear option is greyed out. What would happen if I clicked on "clear all data" on that screen?

I would never suggest you do something without trying it first myself. :) My data is only 72.00kb so it's not like the data is going to be all your pictures or anything. When you clear the data it should reinitialize the galley on the next open. That is the only effect I saw and it really didn't change anything but I am not having a problem with persistent thumbnails, soooo.

If that doesnt work there is a folder on your sdcard called,

Android/Data/com.coolirismedia/cache

Delete that cache folder and on the next gallery open it will rebuild the database. That will do it for sure. It that doesn't do it then the videos must still be present somewhere in your collection.

Just please update us here so this thread may help others in the future. Also while this did not delete any of my photos you can never be too safe. You should probably backup all your photos to your PC first if you haven't already. I do this once a week just to be safe.

BTW, Welcome to the forums. We hope you enjoy your stay. :D

I'll give it a shot shortly and let you know. Like you, I don't have a lot of photos so it's not that big of a deal. I'll try the cache first then the clear. BTW, I admin one well known computer support site and am on staff of several other large support forums so I have not problem trying new things -- just like to have an idea what the do first if you know what I mean :). Thanks again - back shortly.

Colchiro - as I stated in my original post - I've rebooted a number of times.

Well, as it turns out the file Android/Data/com.coolirismedia/cache does not exist on my phone (even did a "search" for it with Astro) so I went ahead with "clear data". When the icons reappeared they were all there, unfortunately. I should have also mentioned there is a blank icon that says "Folders - 2 folders". That used to show my photos. No longer. There is also an icon that says "All photos" which does show my photos and then "All Videos" which shows the 2 ghost icons plus the actual video.

All of my photos and the vid are in the root of DCOM. There are two other folders there - one for thumbs and the other is an empty "camera" folder.

I'm thinking my next move should be to delete all files from the dcom folder (only the photos, vid and the 2 folders mentioned above), reboot, and see what happens. Easy enough for me to then put everything back. Your thoughts? Thanks again.

I am using ApeX ROM with the 3D Gallery so if your stock yours may be named different. You are correct, somewhere on your sdcard there is a cache the gallery is pulling the thumbnails from. You just need to find the cache and delete it.

Couldn't find a file similar to what you're describing anywhere. So I went into the ".thumbnails" folder and deleted everything (two "thumbdata" files and thumbs of all photo/video media). On reboot the first folder (which I mentioned was corrupted) is now okay, but still three video icons. I'm going to just clear the dcom folder completely, reboot, and see what happens. If the ghosts are gone I'll restore all media files and hope for the best. I'll post back.

Also - am I better off creating a separate folder for the video(s)?

Well you're right - there must be a cache somewhere - but I've looked at EVERY file I can find and there is nothing that remotely resembles what I'm looking for. The icons (folders and videos) are still all there even though there are no media files. I'm restoring all of the files and will probably just have to live with this.

Last update. Everything is now fine. After performing all of the above steps and still having the same problem I went back into the thumbnails folder and deleted the two thumbs data files (which I have done probably half a dozen times already today). But this time I did NOT reboot the phone. I just went back into the Gallery app and it took about 4 or 5 minutes for the phone to rebuild the cache and voila - 3 icons. One says "one folder", one says "all photos" and one says "all videos" and each properly displays its contents.

The only thing I did differently this time was to not reboot after deleting the two files (named: thumbdata3 followed by a series of numbers).

I very much appreciate your assistance and patience. I don't want to be rude and post the names of the forums at which I'm on staff GrandMasterB, but if you ever need computer (hw or sw) help either send me an email via this forum or, if you like, I'll be happy to post or pm you the names of the sites. Thanks again friend, and Happy Holidays.

One more stab at this - and two questions please:

1) Am I looking for trouble if I copy all contents of the SD card to my pc then format the card then copy eveything back? Any chance something will not work as expected afterward?

2) I've read about Gallery3d.apk - should I give this a try (Droid-X, 2.2)?

Thanks again :)

1) I do this every few months to keeps things cleaned up. Not only do I back it all up to my PC but I clean house and delete and the stranded files/folders from apps I have tried over the months. If you just copy everything right back after the format you shouldn't see any changes (I don't know if thats good or bad in your situation :) ) Just know that if you decide to delete stuff, some data for your games and downloaded widgets skins, backups etc are stored on the sdcard. If your not sure what something is I'll bet one of of here can tell you.

2)Thats the Gallery I use and its very nice. If you haven't seen it you should give it a spin. I prefer it over the stock Blur Gallery.

Didn't see your reply until now, so let me bring you up to date. I did decide to install Gallery3d and it works great. But more important, it showed blank videos which it allowed me to delete (I could NOT delete them in the stock gallery app). Now everything is perfect - in BOTH gallery apps.

This has been my first experience her GMB, but it has been a very positive one - obviously because of you. Thanks so much again and Happy Holidays :)

Delete the cached data for deleted media with the SDrescan application.

You can as well, for the album arts (the previous is not enough):

Try this:

Go to SETTINGS > APPLICATIONS > MANAGE APPLICATIONS

Select the ALL tab

Scroll down to MEDIA STORAGE

Select CLEAR DATA

To prevent it from reappearing again add a .nomedia to the desired folder or download the app from Google Play: Nomedia

Then rename the folder to update changes.
