Deleting camera roll also deleted downloads?

Android n00blet here. I'm helping a friend backup her images/videos so she can delete them from her phone to make room. We went into the photo app and it showed the Camera Roll (with 2,000 items) and Downloads (with 250 items). She didn't want to backup the downloads but also didn't want to delete them. This was the stuff she said she received from text messages. Anyway, I did the backup by copying everything from the DCIM folder to a PC and confirmed the 2000 items. We then went back into the photo app, tapped into the Camera Roll (not the downloads), hit "Select All" and then Delete.

Afterward, when she goes into the photo app, it doesn't show any camera roll, as expected, but it also doesn't show any downloads. Where did the 250 downloads go?

Thanks,
Gabe

Is she absolutely certain that "Camera Roll" was a synonym for the DCIM folder, and not a label for all photos regardless of where they are on the device?

None of my Gallery apps has a "Camera Roll", but one has "Photos" which includes everything, and another has "All Media" (which does the same but is unambiguously named). So if Camera Roll is just another name for that, it would explain what happened.

I understand people not using it. For one thing, most people use what the device comes with, and will not necessarily think about things like that. For another, I think it's reasonable to have reservations about uploading personal information to Google, which would provide a reason for some people to reject it (that's one of the reasons I don't use Assistant, though I do currently use Photos).

But yeah, if they used it, and if they'd allowed it to back up the folders that the downloaded images were in, then they'd have a copy (provided that they didn't use Photos to do the deletion and have it delete the backup too, which is what it says it is doing when I delete individual images).

i'm guessing Camera Roll is an app found in the play store.....after all this thread is posted in the Camera Roll forum....just a hunch.

not really familiar with this app unfortunately. i do use google photos and never have to worry about my photos and videos. it also keeps track of any pictures or videos i downloaded as well.

Well I just tried it, but still don't know what "she tapped into the camera roll (not the downloads)" means exactly, because that app didn't seem to offer a view called "camera roll" - just the usual folder views and virtual albums. So unless the user had created an album they called "camera roll", or their device had a folder of that name (which wouldn't fit the rest of the post) I still don't know for sure what this was doing.

Honestly, I know so little about Android, I couldn't tell you (iPhone user here). I do know she is not a power user so guessing everything she uses was just standard "out of the box"...unless, of course, someone turned her on to another app that she started using. She's on vacation right now so I can't look at her phone (thus the reason she had to free up space ... make room for her vacation pics). I'm guessing the "downloads" images were included in her "camera roll" images.

All I know is that it's a Droid Turbo.

Thanks for the replies.
