Help Deleting photos

This is my first post so please treat me gently! I have just retired from work and was given a Nexus 7 as a retirement gift. It is my first tablet and am gradually getting to grips with it but would appreciate some help with the following problem.

I can't find a way to delete photographs currently backed up in the gallery. This is what I have been doing, rightly or wrongly.

Click on gallery app in home screen. Select album, select location, highlight photos, click on trash can, delete photo, click ok.

The photos are still there. I have switched off auto back up in Google Plus but still no joy. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I have gone in to settings and my google account. No mention of picasa albums. Have I misunderstood you?

Is it "Gallery" or "Photos" you are using. Some devices have one or both apps and they are similar.

If it is Gallery, I don't understand the step of "select location". Regardless, try this:
Settings > Apps > All (scroll to the right) > Gallery > Clear Cache

Hi
I was using gallery and could only bring up the trash can by selecting location after clicking on album. Although I confirmed I wanted to delete the pics by clicking OK they remained in gallery. Anyway, I have found a solution now but thanks for your response.
