Desire Factory Reset Aftermath

Urgent!!

I did a Factory Reset on my HTC Desire last night, and hoping this would improve the Internal Memory running low problem, but now I have more problems:

1. NO 3G signal, unable to load any web site. I certainly have data plan, and good signal on the phone. WiFi is working properly, is just 3G is not working
2. Lost all my Contacts. I used My Backup to backup all my data, apps and media files, but I don

OK,

Well 1) check your APN settings are present and correct.

Menu>Settings>Wireless and networks>Mobile Networks>APN (access Point Names)

2) Where were your contacts stored? Google / Phone / Sim?

Did my backup state that it had restored the contacts successfully?

Is people definitely set to view the contacts in whatever location you stored them?

I'd concur with what DanFrance said.

Factory reset will bin off any non factory data from the handset.... APN setting, apps, contacts etc.

Contacts, if on your sim or sync'd with Gmail will be simple to retrieve.

SIM
Make sure "show SIM contacts" is enabled in the people app options

GMAIL
Re sync your GMAIL contacts

IF they were just stored on the phone and you had no backup then I think you're out of luck :(

Thanks for helping Denfrence!

I am an idoit when it comes to technology... excuse me for asking dumb question..
what is APN suppose to be? the name of my service provider?

Thanks Japster for the help...

I just remember I export all the contacts to my SD card before the reset. I will import them back to my phone. THe Contact should works fine after that.

I am still worry about the Internal Memory. Looks like my internal memory is still very low after the reset.

Do you think is necessary to Root the HTC Desire to resolve this problem?

Access point names you get from carrier. Possibilly on there website. It's like a username, password and connection details for their network.

What carrier?

If you root, read, read and read some more before jumping in.

Also read both faq in my Sig

I am reading the Root guideline from the forum.. the instruction looks simple, but looks like lots of ppl running to problem during the process. I will do more research before I start anything. Thanks for the advice!

I am with Rogers Canada.

This is just it, people not reading enough information before jumping into the world of rooting

Indeed. Rooting is not to be taken lightly. Yes we may say rooting and flashing is easy, but we're well practiced. First time round it can be very confusing so its definitely recommended to learn the terms, processes and solutions to issues beforehand

Just checked APN setting, nothing show up
will call service provider to ask for APN details
thanks everyone for the help!

I think i better ask someone who is more exprienced to help me with the rooting. its too risky for a newbie like me to do it myself

I think the internal memory 516mb is just too small for today's usage. I don't have too much apps already, still running low.

maybe rooting is the only solution to the issue. I wonder why HTC will only have 516mb in the first place....

the entire phone is 500. The data partition for apps and data etc is even smaller at 147MB

Have another issue with the Desire, Lots of time people can't hear me after I answer the phone. I would say 4 out of 7 calls are like that.
I need to hang up and call them back. I thought doing the reset will help to fix this problem, but just now it happend again.

Do you guys have the same problem as well?

That could well be a carrier problem rather than a phone problem. Do you have access to another handeset? If the issues continues on a differnet handset then you have carrier probs - if not, it may be worhtwhile speaking to your carrier to see what the process for a replacement is.

Hi Japster, I don't have this problem with a different handset. I wonder should I call HTC for a replacement or not.

Also, I did the factory reset but Internal Memory Space still running low.

The memory issue is something you'll probably have to live with. However the call dropping issue shouldn't be. Try your carrier first to see what their process is. I'm sure HTC will diagnose and repair IF THEY FIND A FAULT, but this takes time and your mobile provider may have a faster exchange policy.
