after installing a mapping app on reboot device will not start just the white screen with htc.
Vol- and power on gets to hboot screen, but that is all. Unable to see USB device from either imac and Win7. can get to fastboot and recovery but there are no menus to install anything from sd card.
when plugged into the imac the fastboot changes to fastboot usb but still unable to access the device.

Ah, I just posted this in response to your Guest Question:

When you are in recovery you need to press volume and power together (I think volume up + power) to get the recovery menu. All it will let you do is erase the cache (which might help) or do a factory reset, and all that does is erase all user-installed apps and data.

Now if the problem is an app a factory reset will fix it. But that seems a bit extreme. I'd first try booting into safe mode - reboot the phone while pressing the menu key. In this mode user-installed apps don't run, so if the mapping app is the problem it should boot OK. If that works, try uninstalling the mapping app, then reboot normally.

The tools you normally use to access the phone from a computer only work when it is running android, which if you are in hboot/fastboot or recovery it is not. On an unrooted phone you won't be able to do much in those modes, except run a ROM Upgrade Utility (erase the phone completely and reload all software). It shouldn't come to that, but if safe mode, erasing cache or, in the extreme, a factory reset doesn't fix it, post again, including information on whether your phone is network-branded or not, and we'll find the right RUU for your phone. If it comes to that it might be better to register so that you can post in our HTC Desire forum, since you'll be more certain of somebody who knows the device seeing your post there.

Good luck :)

Agree with Hardon, you may have to reset the phone to factory settings, and then install back your other apps. But do not install the one that causes phone failure.
