Desire HD / DLNA / Divx

Hapas

Hello,

Using the HTC Desire HD as a DLNA client to view Vidoes (mainly in DivX format) so far for me hasn't worked. I have tried the HTC app and various apps from the store.

Has anyone else had any luck, or is anyone aware of an application or method that makes it possible ?

Seems to me it would be a feature that many people would like to use - and I admit I don't fully understand why it does not work.

Regards,
Hapas

It could be a problem with the platform that you are viewing it on, could you please provide a little info on that as well? Thanks.

G'day.

What I've been trying to do is view the files on the DHD - so I'm connecting from the DHD via DLNA to various types of DLNA Server on multiple platforms (NAS, laptop).

I've also tried various different types DLNA client on the DHD and DLNA server software on the remote platform.

Most pictures and music files appear to work. Most types of video seem to be impossible to view using these methods.

Other DLNA clients (e.g. ps3) appear to work fine so I am assuming the client software I am using is unable to play Divx, and the media servers I'm using are not performing pre-processing to present the videos in a format that the DHD DLNA clients understand.

(or something) :)

This a problem reported and discussed before. Dhd wont stream divx files over dnla, among other formats. even though the default player might play them, when streaming over network it wont. VLC playrr seems to work well.

Yes you're right the default player has no trouble playing those files when I transfer them to the sdcard, so the issue is with the DLNA client software - at least that's still my assumption.

I have seen that there are various client/server products out there on the market that will allow video streaming from a PC to DHD, but I'd ideally like to not have to run yet another server, or even have my PC running, just to watch a video on my phone. Defeats the object a little - my goal was to use the DHD as just another DLNA client, like my ps3.

I've done some further reading and I think the problem is that Android itself does not natively support Divx. I'm surprised that there is not a way to achieve this over DLNA currently as I thought it would be a feature many people were interested in - I don't want to have to transfer videos to my SDcard when I have them available on the network.

Perhaps a way around it for me would be to configure the DLNA server software to do some preprocessing/conversion, so that the DHD DLNA client(s) can understand it. It would be a fudge though.
