Desire HD or Desire S

Paffman

Newbie
Hi all,

To cut a long story short, I did have a Desire HD on a 24 month contract with 3, but as I am in a bad reception area the HTC would not receive a signal, nor did the replacement so I ended up with a Samsung Galaxy S.

Still not happy with my 3 coverage I moaned at 3 today and they agreed to cancel my contract at no cost and gave me a PAC code. I want to go with Vodafone as if I don't get a better signal I can always get the Sure Signal box.

Now my question is - do I go for the Desire HD again or the new Desire S?

Over to you Gents :D

I suppose it depends on what you want. I only recently upgraded from the original Desire to the DHD and I don't think I would be happy with a smaller screen ever again!!! lol!

The screen size was the main seller for me. The only benefits that I have noticed with the Desire S is the front facing camera and Android 2.3 (which the DHD will soon also possess). I was will to forego these for the DHD.

I'm thinking that HTC will be releasing a new 4.3inch device pretty soon though, so I'm not sure whether it would be a good idea to get a DHD now, or whether you could wait to see what will be announced in the coming weeks.

Thanks for that.

I need to get a phone asap as the PAC code from 3 won't last that long.

Looks as if the S has a 3.7in screen and the latest OS, but as you say that should come to the DHD soon. It's the same speed processor, but I didn't know if it had anything else fancy to offer?

Will pop into Phones4U tomorrow and see them in the flesh.

Didn't know if the battery life/issue was fixed/better?

Don't you have mates that can pop over who are on different service providers so you can check reception on each network? That said, I have the Sure Signal box and it's been pretty good. I've moved once but apart from that disconnection I've only had to re-boot the box twice in about 18 months.

Hi Dave,

I did try a free Vodafone sim a while ago and it was about the same - poor/1 bar - sometimes. Unless they have increased the coverage here, I'll have to get a Sure Signal box.

I did ask the sales person (via live chat) to double check the coverage here and she still stated that it was really good

As long as the SS box works if I don't get a signal I'll be OK.

It seems that if they say it's a good reception area but you cant get reception in your home if you complain hard enough they should issue one for free... otherwise, and in my case because I moved to a bad reception area, you will have to pay for the box, which I personally object to, as I already pay the company a lot of money for the privilege of making and receiving an occasional phone call. So instead I switch to 2G and use wifi when I'm at home to save myself the

Yeah, had that before. Their coverage maps aren't anywhere near good enough to tell you the signal strength in "fringe" areas. You really have to go there and test it. Of course the other thing is that some phones pick up weaker signals than others so it's a bit of a minefield.

go for incredible S mate, better than both these phones

Went into Carphone Warehouse and tried the "Incredible S" before I decided on the DHD. Actually having the thing in my hand, I knew it wasn't for me. The back feels weird and unnatural. The only area it wins is front facing camera. The DHD seemed to be either near enough equal or better on all the other specs... There was nothing "Incredible" about it for me... :D

Thanks to all for your input. I have decided to go for the DHD, should get it Tuesday. Fingers crossed that I can get a signal on it, if not I'll be getting the Sure Signal box.

Cheers :)

Paff I had to make the same decision, the big screen won it for me. I love my DHD even the battery as not been a problem for me. Could not go back to a small screen again. Had a front facing camera on my previous Nokia and never used it (who makes video calls).

Hi Spaceprobe,

Thanks for the comment.

What's the bottom line with the DHD? Like it or love it? Anything that bugs you?

Anyone know when Gingerbread 2.3 will be available?

Spec wise, absolutely not, the DHD is superior to both S phones, so to the op, DHD ll the way.

only screen size is .3 inches smaller in incredible s

edge over DHD:
1) far better super LCD screen (see it to believe the difference :) )
2) front facing camera
3) latest sense (well not so much diff from DHD though)
apart from these it has all the goodies of DHD (same RAM and processor)

so how come DHD is superior to incredible s ? except .3 inch screen :)

Your right, they are very similar. But the front facing camera is 90% useless, few people use video chat apart from horny 15 year old boys. I've seen the screen. And it looks very similar to me, I always had it in my head DHD was slcd aswell, I'm obviously wrong but still, I couldn't tell a difference in contrast.

Dhd has larger internal memory if we are being incredibly picky, granted not many people care. But it still makes it superior.

Well, from my perspective that list just highlights how similar they are. If I'm not mistaken, both will be running gingerbread with Sense 2.1 on the same internals as soon as we get the update. And I know for a fact I would never use a front facing camera.

I see them both as sidegrades from each other; each has minor advantages over the other, but not enough to say one is the better phone. I would be happy with either.

Hmm, I'm quite sure more people will not use a front facer than those that do. you're the first person I've seen actually trying to sell up on one.

My friend bought an iphone because of face time and a front facing camera, never seen him use it.

If your using it for vlogging...on a 1.3mp? really?

Listen, i don't want to bicker and act like children on a forum where quite frankly we should be allies, I am a massive fan of all HTC products and am a proud owner of multiple HTC phones since a few years back, and i'm sure you have a similar standing. I was simply giving my input to the OPs question with my own personal opinion and seasoned advice.

Hi Paff,

Like my HDH more each day and the battery seems to be getting better (put it on charge when I go to bed). Gripes: Terrible speaker quality need to plug it into an external speaker to listen to pod casts while pottering around the kitchen. The ring tone could be louder, I have fund installing the the 8 bit sound set helps. I use Google maps sat nav which is better then I thought it would be. The in built voice is terrible but much better ones are available from the Market. The HDH does not include auto answer and only allows remote voice dial if you subscribe to the HTC navigation service. However you can get round this by downloading auto answer and voice dial apps from the Market. I am now very pleased with my Google sat nav via the HDH's large screen, whilst the extra apps allow my phone to link and be fully functional with my Audi's inbuilt hands free system.

So overall very well pleased with my phone purchase, glad I took the plunge to Android and to me the HDH is an amazing bit of kit, not perfect but not far off.

I did go for the DHD in the end. I like you love it more each day (sad), the external speak is cr@p making taking calls and listening to music a pain. Am looking forward to the Gingerbread update to see if any of the bugs have been fixed. I also had to get a Vodafone Sure Signal box in the end as the normal signal was dire. Fun and games registering the box as all the new serial numbers were not on their data base  Had to wait a few days but now have a FULL signal around the house and beyond :D

Locations also puts me 5 miles away from where I really am and even if I manually set it, it just goes back. Not a DHD fault though.

Happy days.
